Clothing for Cornell

I'm an incoming freshmen and I was wondering if any current cornell students (specifically girls) had any brands or specific names of Coats and winter wear that work for Cornell's winters?

Thank you! That was very helpful. Although would anyone recommend me purchasing this coat for winter? It looks warm but I don’t know…

[Label Lab Fur lined hooded parka Khaki - House of Fraser](http://www.houseoffraser.co.uk/Label+Lab+Fur+lined+hooded+parka/180774842,default,pd.html)

Also can someone create a list of clothing they usually bring? I know we will find out more during orientation but there some really good sales going on right now.

I live in Ithaca, and I can safely say that that’s a tricky question. Ithaca is one of those places that’s freezing in the winter (it was below zero a few days ago) and mild to fairly hot in the summer. It depends on whether or not you plan on spending your summers here, but if you’re going to be here for just the school year (so Sept. to May), plan for the cold. It isn’t too bad Sept. to Oct. (50-60 degree range) but from Nov. to Feb. and sometimes March it’s on average below freezing. It should start warming up again in April. In light of all that, my best advice would be to bring fairly warm clothes. Short sleeved shirt are fine, and there are times that shorts can be worn, but make sure that you bring some sort of winter coat, gloves, etc. Just things to keep warm in the months where it really sucks.

Yeah I don’t plan on bringing short sleeved clothing unless for lounge wear

Bring some light clothing for orientation.
I remember it being hella hot, and I regretted not bringing many shorts.
Also, a small fan does you wonders if you live in a dorm that doesn’t have AC.

However, during the winter, expect fallout to happen.
I stayed at Cornell this winter, and there was a day it snowed over a foot.

Okay I’ll remember that! Anyone have any thoughts on the coat I showed? Is it good for winter?

That seems okay for fall and early winter.
I recommend something more thicker though.

What brand would you recommend? I like northface, fjallraven, and Canada goose but they are really expensive.

I would suggest a longer coat (that covers your arse) for the colder months.

Do brands really matter?
Just get something thick that keeps you warm xD

But anyways, I usually always get Northface and it’s never failed me.
And I’m pretty sure winter-wear is going to go on sale soon because spring’s approaching.
Maybe those brands you like will be cheaper then?

I know I wasn’t asking fashion wise but about brands that have warm coats but are no more than £120 or $200. I just need to know where to look and where others found good coats for Ithaca.

buy a uniqlo down parka, preferably long and with a hood, and buy a short uniqlo. They are very very discounted right now. Wear the short under the long on really cold days. Wear the long by itself on regular cold days and wear the short early in the season. Do bring some short sleeve springy stuff since it is Aug. when you move in and may be hot for an entire month.

There’s a friggin winter clearance right now, just go to macy’s (or macys.com if there isn’t a store around) or something.

I don’t even understand how girls can have trouble shopping for clothes. I went to a store (I think Dillards) and the upper floor literally had probably 1500 sq feet dedicated exclusively to women’s peacoats. Meanwhile there wasn’t a single peacoat for sale in the men’s section of the store.

Sad life of men, bro. Sorries to hear x.x

I would recommend Patagonia, or anything which is water proof. Rain boots are a must, as well as a strong umbrella.

If you want to go out (party) while you are at Cornell, you’ll need some dresses and heels. My daughter has nice tops, not turtle necks or sweaters, to wear with jeans when going out. I would also bring some summer clothes for Aug - Sep and May. People tend to break out their summer clothes as soon as it hits 60 on a sunny day. As a college student, you should also have an interview outfit.

Make sure to get some warm winter boots that will also be good for the snow. The bean boots by llbean would be good.

For coats, I’m a big fan of Karbon! I have one to ski in and, I can wear it comfortably when it’s anywhere from 45 F to -10F

Would you recommend uggs? The llbean boots look sturdy and weatherproof but they aren’t really my style. I just want some simple (preferably black for convenience) boots that I can easily throw on with any outfit, but can definitely handle snow and rain. Any recommendations?
