Clothing

Aside from the obvious, is there anything a freshman girl will want to have between move in and Thanksgiving? Any "dress up" clothes? How cold will it get by then?

I don't think it's going to get that cold by Thanksgiving. I'm attending in the fall too and I don't plan on bringing any winter clothes until Thanksgiving.

But, if a current student or Nashville resident says otherwise, I may need to change that lol

there's an honor code signing within the first few days of school. people got pretty dressed up... heels and maybe a little dressier than a sundress. i can show you pics of what some girls wore to mine if you want.

it doesnt get cold, but then again its what you are used to.

by thanksgiving u can expect nashville to be probably in the 50s or so on typical days. however, dont be naive like me and assume nashville is in the south and is therefore like florida... nashville is a whole different cold in the winter (dec/jan/feb)-- like 30s cold. my freshman year i had this wacko idea that nashville was 65 and up all year round lol. definitely not the case.

Just be sure to stock up on all the American Eagle, Abercrombie, and Hollister money can buy!

try again.

Yeah sounds more like J Crew, Polo, Vineyard Vines, Lacoste

Actually, I was joking, as those companies are for new money yuppies and punks.

Vineyard Vines sucks, Lacoste sucks.

Brooks Brothers kicks ass, Polo Ralph Lauren kicks ass, Patagonia and similiar outdoorsman clothiers kick ass, Orvis & Cabelas if they're not in the previous category kick ass, other companies that don't suck kick ass.

You're welcome for the help.

HAHA pure blasphemy, while I'm not too big a fan of Lacoste (none of their stuff actually looks normal when you're wearing it I don't really know how to describe it), Vineyard Vines is INCREDIBLE. There are no better ties in the world. And I don't know if I have ever met anyone who wears Orvis clothing, unless they are off on a fly fishing trip. Patagonia jackets are nice, but I wouldn't wear any of their hippie ass button up granola hemp shirt pieces of crap. And you didnt comment on Jcrew but that is also the bomb and I agree with your statements about Polo and BB

I wish my daughter read this board - she would happily provide a detailed list, by designer/hue/whatever. :) However, she has always brought way too much clothing, and each semester swears she'll bring less the next time. She loves clothes, so with that in mind: she brings several sundresses, a few nice cocktail dresses, one formal, dress pants as well as jeans (some of which apparently have nicer designer names- she buys most of her own clothing, so I don't know which ones), skirts (denim and otherwise), and shorts. She has a rain poncho-type thing and a North Face all-weather jacket for the summer/fall, then brings her winter coat when she returns home for Thanksgiving. Shoes: many, though she has a definite thing for shoes and would be over the top in this area wherever she went to school. Several flip-flops (some Rainbows, some generic), two pairs of dressy heels because she always needs a choice, several pairs of cute flats ...

If your d loves dressing up, she'll be in heaven at Vandy.

Nashville seems to have major swings in temp. at least last year. Several days of cold then several days of warm.

okay to above, your first frat party at vanderbilt (or first class) will prove to you that no matter how much you think obnoxiously preppy clothes like vineyard vines, polo, and lacoste are concerned, people wear them. not necessarily with confidence either....

but yeah if you are like most freshman girls, you'll bring many sundresses and normal dresses, large sunglasses (i think originated by jackie o. and audry hepburn), and a foreign car that's worth at least 40k.

but honestly, most girls wear these things, if you want to know what they do i guess

its not going to get cold before thanksgiving. last year there were a few days in the 40s, but for the most part november was mild. december is when some days in the 30s (and a few in the 20s) begin to hit.

id be glad to answer any other weather related questions ...

Women would be well advised to wear those Polo dresses around.

My D confirmed post #10.

Whoa- You will have some chilly days before Thanksgiving! You don't need major boots, scarves etc., but I would want sweaters and a winter jacket for Oct/Nov. Two years ago it was below freezing on Thanksgiving day.

What do the guys bring in terms of non-casual clothing?

If you have to ask that question, then don't worry about a suit.

Probably just worry about decent shoes, belt, khaki pants, white oxford, regimental stripe tie, navy blue blazer.

Midwesterner, guys in the south really do dress up a bit differently than guys in the midwest. We are from the midwest & I definitely noticed the guys' non casual clothes (at football games ... it's definitely not the midwest!!). Palmettotree is from the south, I think, so definitely pay attention to his suggestion. Plus, I think you might need some stuff for casual (like football games) that we in the midwest wouldn't really consider casual ... like pastel buttondown shirts, ties to go with those shirts, pastel polos, khakis, nice shorts (not cargo). I am sure the guys here know more than I do ... and I am just giving info based on what I saw ... so help out guys ... most midwesterners are used to dressing more casually than folks in the south. If Midwesterner is packing, what should be in his suitcase?

haha kelsmom and palmettotree got it pretty right. you cant go wrong with khakis and polos. pastel shorts are also quite popular...mainly with the frat crowd.
