Club Baseball Leadership Position

I don't really know how I should list my leadership position for my club baseball team.

To give some background information, I had been playing on the same baseball team from the sixth grade through tenth grade, and I had been on the team longer than anyone else.

We didn't necessarily have "captains" on the teams, but if we did I would have been it. For that reason, I don't really think that I should deem myself captain on my application, but I do feel that I should be recognized for what I did with the team.

One time we had a couple of extra kids come by and we mixed them in with us and had a scrimmage game, and the coach did name me "captain" for picking teams (you know, like how we pick teams for football in gym class), and he did choose me over his own son, haha. Does that merit anything?

Any thoughts?

bump (10 char)

I don’t think your coach randomly naming you captain for a scrimmage game means you have been labeled the Team Captain and can place that on your application. However, it obviously shows you are a leader to your team and your coach recognizes that. I would privately talk to your coach and ask him about it. Maybe he doesn’t want to recognize you formally as “Team Captain” in front of everyone else, but would be okay with you putting “Team Captain” or “Team Leader” on your app. You could also put in the details section you have been on the team since 6th grade, that shows colleges you are dedicated to it. If there are more specific things you did as a leader of the team (I am not in sports but I am guessing a team captain does things like lead warmups, help organize events, etc) you could include these in an essay or in the details section.

Good luck!

It wasn’t random.

Due to league rules, I’m too old to play now, but I am now the assistant coach for that same team. I have my coaching listed under a separate category than the playing, but I definitely did lead the team in some way during the time that I played, but I just don’t know how I should communicate it.

Thanks for the response.
