Hi! I moved to my current high school in September 2016 as a freshman (9th grader). I joined a few clubs and I really want to have a leadership position in two of them. One of the clubs is having elections in April for next year’s officers and I want to run for treasurer, but I am not sure if I should do it this year or next year. I feel like I am at a disadvantage because I am a new student and not a lot of people know me. Plus, a lot of the kids in that club are the popular type that don’t really talk to me. If I lose this year, then I would be embarrassed to run again next year. What do you suggest I do?
Go ahead and try for the leadership position. You never know what’s going to happen unless you try. If you really want that leadership position, demonstrate your interest and dedication to the club and let them know how you could be a valuable asset. If you lose, I don’t know whether you’ll be embarrassed or not, but you shouldn’t be. Losing a club election is never something you should be embarrassed about. I’ve never been the super popular type, but I still got leadership positions because I ran for things that aligned with my skill set and let my actions speak for me. Who knows, you might win and make some new friends in the process. However, I just want to reiterate you’ll never know unless you try.
Thank you so much! Your advice is helpful. I think I will run for office.
Great, best of luck!
DO IT! No fear. You can lose nothing and gain everything.
Thank you so much for the motivation!
No worries! I was in your position 3 years ago as a freshman. I went for it, and it most definitely paid off.
Thank you for your help!
