Club vs Intramural for Freshmen

I went to high school abroad and I will be attending Brown this fall.

I played HS varsity basketball for 3 years and I just want to know the difference between club and intramural sports.

I've heard that "club" is more competitive? What are the differences between these two and will joining either negatively affect my academics (because of practices and whatnot)? I'm a CS major btw

Yes club is more competitive, you usually compete against other club teams in the area depending on your school!
-usually at my school at least I think it’s like no more than 2 practices during the week and it’s usually like no more than 2 hours as well!
Intramural is more laid back in the sense that you can have a team with friends and you would play against other teams at your school.
-For practices I guess it depends on your team?

and I believe with both depending on the sport/number of team members you have to pay a fee for the season
As long as you develop good study habits in the beginning I feel like you should be fine!

Both my kids played Club sports and UIM sports in college - and they were a different sport than their varsity HS sport.

Son’s team works out a mimimum of 1 -2 hrs a day. D’s team @ 2 hrs a week, so it really depends on the team. Club sports very intense - not as intense as varsity though. IM is more fun, but my kids’s school has different levels of IM competition also, so if you want you can relax and just have fun or get intense.

added in edit: Both kids in Engineering, and they both do ok in academics - IMHO, Sports helps contribute to good GPA - good release - get’s you out of the dorm and away from the books = all good. Can help concentration, and who doesn’t like endorphins? BTW - kid got an A in Orgo as a Freshman while playing club sport.

Good luck, and keep playing.

Brown alumnus here. I don’t think we have club basketball but I may be wrong. Intramural would not have practices unless your team wanted to practice. Since you assemble your team whether or not you make a team with people who will take it that seriously is up to you and them.

I’ve checked the site and Brown does have club basketball. Will joining a club team negatively affect academics?

Also, I want to play for fun but I also want it to be competitive.
