I am a sophomore transfer and I am trying to be more proactive in meeting people than I was at my last school. I have found 6+ clubs that I would like to join, a dance team and I am also considering transferring into my sorority from my last university. I had a 3.6 gpa at my last school but I was only in one club plus my sorority so I am concerned my grades will slip if I join too many activities. Will this be too much for my first semester as a transfer? (Also transfers how many clubs/activities did you join and did it effect your grades?) thanks!
Welcome fellow transfer!
I had a similar mindset when I transferred last year, and it worked out for me. I would say that how many clubs you join depends on the person, but really you should be fine if you don’t make a commitment to anything upfront.
I joined a few clubs during my first semester as a transfer. I joined a dance team and the school newspaper, and it was enough for me to feel like I was doing something. Remember, you’re going to be adjusting to a new school, so overwhelming yourself is not ideal.
The following semester, once I was comfortable at school, I joined two additional clubs, took a break from the newspaper, and became an officer in one of the clubs; I also earned two different roles in transfer admissions.
Clubs did not affect my grades because I always put school first. I notified my dance team leader that I would miss practice one night so that I could study for a challenging test. I maintained a good GPA, all while being a commuter student and having two part-time jobs, so it’s definitely possible!
