I have my own club at school and I play club basketball, but thats pretty much it. Do colleges focus on the extra outside of school stuff a lot or no? And how do colleges verify that the club is actually yours or not? I feel like a lot of people can fake this stuff

Some colleges that take a holistic approach to looking at your application will like to see you being involved in extracurricular activities, it just sort of depends on the school. I guess there is no way for them to technically know, but I guess they could contact your school. I feel like they would assume you were telling the truth though.

“I feel like a lot of people can fake this stuff”

Sure. But 85% of colleges don’t look at a single EC to admit/reject applicants. ONly the very very selective ones do. Are these the type of college you are targeting?

kind of… cornell, nyu, bu, etc

It depends on the college. You can look at section C7 of their Common Data Set to see how highly they regard extracurricular activities. As a general rule, the more competitive the college is the more important ECs are, but that may not always be the case.

NYU and Cornell believe that extracurricular activities are very important. BU considers extracurricular activities but does not find them to be terribly important.

Extracurricular activities are important - but quality is generally more important than quantity. They want to see that you had outside interests and how you pursued them (sustained interest and leadership (like being president of your club)).
