Clubs/Organizations at UC Berkeley

I'm considering attending Cal next fall; one of my important criteria in choosing consists of clubs and organization diversity and availability.

For example, a few of my friends have taken up new things upon coming to college (e.g. one took up fencing for the first time and another the clarinet). I want to have a similar experience at whichever college I choose to attend.

Would you say Berkeley's clubs are relatively open to "newbies?" For example I might try out for the "newmen" part of Calband, even though I've only had half a year's experience with the alto saxophone and barely any with marching. Would this be feasible, or would I just get rejected when I audition?

Any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated!
