I think they would consider cheerleading a sport.

I'm being recruited for soccer. Anyone else?

Here's the deal with clubs and stuff--clubs are awesome. You can do so much, go so many places with a club, most of the time for free. BUT, clubs take up a lot of time. Clubs are required to meet on either Monday or Tuesday, so in all reality you'll only be able to do one or two. I wanted to do a billion clubs before I came, but I only have time to do two--OCF on Tuesdays and Cav Scouts on Monday. Cav Scouts is AWESOME. Over 150 people came to the first meeting, but we could only take 70 or so. We go on these huge FTXs every month or so. We'll leave on Friday and come back on Sunday. We operate in Area W (which is just a segment of the West Point training grounds, where they do Sapper stuff). We take out about a dozen Humvees, hundreds and hundreds of blank rounds, MILES gear, M240s, M16s, .50 cals, RPGs, IEDs, artillery sims, etc. (all of these capable of firing blank rounds). The Troop is split up into two different Platoons, with a Headquarters operating separately. In addition, there's a 12-15 man OPFOR. The Troop treats each FTX as much as possible like a real mission. They have to make OP Orders, conduct reconaissance, all the good stuff. We've had different missions. At one point, we're were to conduct a screening operation. On another FTX our mission was to operate as a convoy to weed out the insurgents in the area. We generally arrive at our FOB at the Sapper area on Friday at 6 or so and get issued all of our gear (weapons, ammunition, MREs, MILES gear). We roll out once everyone is ready. By this time, the OPFOR has been out and about for several hours. What generally ensues is a 36 hour battle. It's AWESOME. We'll travel in a convoy to wherever we're going, periodically getting attacked by both insurgents, mortars, and IEDs. I've learned SO MUCH. We have to pull security all night, which can be pretty hard when you're so tired. (we do 33 percent security). I know how to use NVGs, drive a Humvee, operate a ton of different weapons, use a map for a convoy, install and operate a radio, how to react to an IED, and much, much more. I mean, heck. We even had to negotiate with a Sheikh at one point! I have pictures of him and his little kid all dressed up, the kid carrying an AK! There's little more fun than a running battle, or getting attacked in the middle of night and having to respond to it. Not only is it good training, but we have an AWESOME time, and I've met some really good people, both upperclassmen and underclassmen. We go to ranges all the time, including M4, M9, and M240B ranges. Before Christmas we went up to FT Drum to do 50 cal gunnery. The OICs don't hesitate to rip the Chain of Command for mistakes they make, and we always have an AAR. If you're looking a for a hooah military club that actually does stuff, join Cav Scouts. The cool thing is, it doesn't matter what year you are when it comes to leadership positions. I'll be a Yuk next year, but I could very well be a PSG. All that matters is how much you know. I would HIGHLY advice checking out Cav Scouts. Infantry Tactics Club hardly does anything. In fact, they've only been on 1 FTX this year. We're a lot more active and get to do cool stuff. We also have very good monetary support--we just bought mounts to put the 240Bs up on the Humvees. We get new gear all the time. (can you tell yet that I like Cav Scouts?) lol

Anyways, here's the link to it's website.

Just so you know, everyone wants to join the Jump Team, and very, very few people make it--something like 6. You won't get any breaks, including Spring Break. You train for most of Christmas Break and get to go home for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The next day, you go to Nationals. I don't know... I wanted to do it to, but it takes up so much time, and you're gonna be REALLY busy. But you guys will see when you get here.

marines4me,

Yes, I can tell you like Cav Scouts. You sound a lot happier now, too.

If anyone wants to join excellent clubs, look for the choirs. Glee Club, religious choirs, anything along those lines are money. They go on some really great trips, which they may just happen to gear towards happening on training weekends. This is a huge advantage for any plebe looking to get away. In addition, the upperclassmen are generally rather friendly, no hazing ensues, and oftentimes (with the exception of Glee Club) being able to sing really well is not a requirement. :)

marines4me, you sound like you're having A LOT of fun :)

at least on the weekends.

Cav. Scouts seems like a really cool club. Marines4Me that was an awesome post, before reading that i was leaning towards Infantry Tactics but now i'm ready to try out for the Scouts.

Well, the thing I really do love about this place is the awesome opportunity for training. It really can't be beat. The day to day life might suck really badly, but there are some incredible opportunities, especially if you want to learn. So much cool stuff, and 99.9 percent of it is free. And yes, the weekends are awesome when I'm with Cav Scouts! :)

It'd be awesome if you guys joined the Club! I could definitely help you out. I'm trying to be a PSG, and if I am, I could pull you into my Platoon! I'm gonna look up all of you next year anyways just to check up and make sure ya'll are doing alright. I'll probably come by the week after ReOrgy week, maybe during ReOrgy week (probably not, you guys wiill be WAY too busy and stressed).

If I end up at West Point, I'll join :)

twin_b,

Hmmmmm! A 2nd born twin who's a plebe happy to get away for a weekend? Hmmmmm! And who goes on great trips with a Choir? Could one of those great trips be to the White House? I wonder if I know this twin...

momoftwins,

WOW! You have twins too?! What are the odds?? ;)

And yes, I'm always a very happy plebe when I'm far away from West Point...or at the White House. Hooah. :D

Hooah, yourself! I hope you're eating up all of those brownies! Cuz the healthy boodle is on the way. Now go and get that Chem homework done.

marines4me, out of curiosity can women join this club? It sounds like something I'd love to do, but I know women can't be in calvary and stuff.

http://www.usma.edu/dmi/c&s_team.htm

the picture there is all guys.

i thought marines4me was a woman????? am i wrong?

Taffy - 3
marines4me - 1

finally i have some competition for people thinking im a female.

marines4me in another post said he/she was a girlscout for 10 years. I thought that warrents a guess at the female identity

does the jump team get freefall wings? and how many jumps do they make a week?

Marines4me is, in fact, a woman. The picture of the Cav Scouts is only a subset of the total club (those that qualified on .50).

Marines4me, are there any clubs that women can't join?

:)

Yes, I'm female. Not that I know of. There are no girls in the Infantry Tactics Club. There are 3 girls in Cav Scouts, and we all love it. The guys are really cool. I didn't go to the 50 cal range because I went on pass that weekend. If any of you girls have questions about anything that you don't want to ask on this Forum, feel free to email me, I'd be happy to answer anything you want.

The Jump Team does NOT get freefall wings. The kind of jumps they do are competitive jumps, not Army jumps.
