I’m going to be a sophomore in high school. I want to start a medicine related club. I’m a little afraid that no one would join the club. Also, I need some ideas about what we would do in the club?
MODERATOR’S NOTE:
I’ve moved this thread to High School Life from College Admissions. Don’t start a club for the sake of starting a club - admissions sees right through that.
Now starting a club to fill a need is fine. And I’m sure members can give you ideas on how to go about.
I truly want to start the club. I love teaching others about the healthcare field. But I’m afraid it won’t be popular.
Best approach is for YOU to come up first with what you would do in such a club. Do your research first.
I have some ideas such as fundraising money to donate to an organization or hospital educating others about the types of jobs in the healthcare field, and how to get into medical school.
Seems like an easy answer to me – Decide what you want the club’s mission to be, find out what it takes to start a club at your HS (likely you will have to get a teacher advisor), and see if others are interested. If the club works out that is fine, if not you will need to seek out other things to get involved in.
You may want to look into HOSA. It’s a national organization/competition centered around getting students interested in health-related professions - think Science Olympiad but centered around the medical field.
But, yeah, don’t copy other people’s ideas or do what you think looks good on a college application. Find an activity you’d be interested in or a problem you’re passionate about addressing, and I guarantee that as long as it isn’t too niche and you advertise, you’ll find like-minded students.
Don’t be afraid that nobody will join the club; worst case scenario, you won’t be able to start it. Don’t let that prevent you from atleast trying. Wayne Gretsky once said, “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”. Take the shot, and know you gave it your best go if it doesn’t work out. Maybe have nurses or something come in and talk about their professions, how they got their jobs, etc. Mainly get speakers to come in and speak about their jobs, maybe talk through a video of a surgery or something (that’s what the Medical Club at my school does). Possibly have a field trip to a local hospital and get a tour or something. Organize a club fundraiser to raise money for research for a disease, maybe like a dodgeball game or something? Just ideas, you do whatever you want. GL!
@DJCURRYBEATS19 Thank you for everything you have done to try to help me!
Pleanty of schools have medical clubs! Trust me there will be many kids from all grades who want to be future doctors, nurses etc. who would benefit from this club. Go for it!
