Okay so I am a freshman currently attending a performing arts university. I plan on transferring and becoming a communications/ public relations major. I am applying to Marist college and northeastern. My gps is 2.7 unweighted and I have a lot of volunteer hour and singing groups and performances. I wanted to know if I have a shot at getting in at either of those places. And if coming in as a transfer is helping or hurting. Thank you for helping!

Hi Penelope5- I have no personal knowledge of transfer students @ Marist, but I copied this info from the collegeboards website, and dont know if it helps, but I do wish you success! The communications/PR program @ Marist is excellent! Good Luck!

Hi - I also don’t know specifically for incoming transfer students, but it looks like you’d have a pretty good shot at being accepted, at least to me!

I’m a currently freshman Communications major and plan on concentrating in Public Relations as well… so far I’ve mainly had core classes, only two “communication” classes, but I’ve spoke with other people who seem to feel that Marist has a good program for it. I also took a ‘career development’ course my freshman first semester and found it so helpful in direct myself and to begin networking. Feel free to ask any questions or PM me if you want some current student insights! :)

Hi again newrose72-glad to see you! My son was in FOCUS as well, Im asssuming that was what you were referring to as 'career development?" and he found it most helpful too! He had the same ‘eh’ feel about core courses-like lets get on with it- lol. Penelope5 as a transfer student would probably not have to do the core, especially if the transfer credits covered it, or would it still be required do you think? And I agree I think Penelope5 has a good shot! Marist is a great school, nice community, and friendly students! (but I’m biased lol)

Hi petcat – no, mine was a specific 1-credit course “career development” CRDV class, but I’ve heard good things of the FOCUS too!

I think that Penelope would be able to skip the basic core classes - but there are still more core requirements to be filled throughout sophomore year and all. Speaking of which, Penelope are you planning to transfer for sophomore fall or spring?

Well. I’m planning on transferring for the fall. However, i think I’ll have to start as a freshman though because my classes are all music related with the exception of first year writing. I just visited Marist yesterday and I’m even more in love with the school. I reall hope I have a shot. I know my gpa is a little low but I thought I could make up for it in other ways such as volunteering and particiapating in as many singing groups as I can. Do you all have any other ideas of extras things I can do to make me stand out?

Hi again Penelope5-Yes, isnt the campus beautiful? Its nice for parents as well because there are so many prime spots to sit and look at the water if you are on campus to get your student and they are still asleep :). Do you mind me asking what school you are in now? As far as doing extra to make you stand out, are you talking about before you transfer or after? I’m assuming you meant before, but thats kind of past tense, right? so after, do you mean that you can say you are involved and and will be involved in in Marist as well? I’m sure they are always looking for music people, and they have several bands on campus as well as singing groups. Again, this is a bit out of my knowledge of all things Marist- hoping someone else can pick up??

Currently, I’m a freshman at the university of the arts in Philadelphia. I’m in the vocal performance major and I’ve come to find out I that would really like a school with more of a campus with more school spirit and clubs. The application deadline for transfers is June 1st so I haven’t submitted my application yet. So I would like to make myself with the little time I have available.

I don’t recommend waiting until the last minute to apply as a transfer because you could run into problems regarding the availability of on campus housing.
