I've heard that Claremont McKenna's campus is incredibly ugly. Supposedly students from Pomona call it the ugly duckling of the 5 campuses. Is there any truth to this claim?

I applied to CMC, and its only now that I've been putting thought into the aesthetics of the campus.

There is a huge rivalry ( all in fun) between the two schools, so I would take the comments with that in mind. I actually like the CMC campus a lot. Pomona is more ivy covered brick, a back east style. CMC is very modern and efficient but definitely Californian in it's style of dorms. I like both campuses , lots of grass, trees, warm breezes. It is not ugly at all unless you just like older buildings.

I liked CMC's campus when I visited. It had a very laid-back attitude, but the buildings itself were very modernized, and there were lots of green fields around. I saw some students stretching and exercising next to the grassy patch on the main field! I didn't get to take a look at Pomona, but I did get a quick glance and like arizonamom said, it is more of a brick/ivy style.

harvey mudd is def. the ugly duckling. its about twice the size of my backyard (not really) and just as unkept. its like 10 buildings total. a really really sad campus. convinced me not to apply when i visited.

cmc is pretty nice. i live 5 minutes away (from claremont). Their parties are and incidentally not too hard to get into if you're underage. Its small and what not also

I like the CMC campus. It's simple, spread out, and relaxed.
Scripps is the prettiest out of all the Claremont Schools and Harvey Mudd is definitely the ugliest campus.

In my opinion, Pomona has the best campus. I may be a little biased since that's where I want to go but after visiting i thought it was the best designed, most spacious and overall best kept. Scripps came in second for me, a very different style but also very nice. CMC is after that, a more modern look but the towers and buildings like that were a bit off a turn off and contrast with pomona. Scripps is allright but like someone at pomona "it looks like a Motel 6". nad HMC is definitely the ugliest. It's a complete contrast with Pomona.

I visited this fall. Pomona is in fact prettier of a campus (from the little bit I was walking around it) and the dorms at CMC are just more of a modern, not really nice look. But it's not ugly. They take care of the grounds really well, and with the mountains right there as a backdrop, I really liked it.

I suppose "ugly" is a strong word... but it's certainly not an attractive campus in my opinion. I mean, there's just no buildings or aesthetic structures on the campus that someone could point to and say "That is a pretty building".

My ranking of the 5 C's in terms of campus aesthetics:

I think HMC gets a bad rep for some reason. The architecture on HMC's campus is very different from the other colleges, but overall I like the campus pretty well.

I would agree that CMC's architecture is not distinguished but it doesn't stand out as bad either, so you don't walk around and think; this is ugly. With such great weather and everything green and well kept, the buildings don't seem to matter as much. The Antheum room is very distinguished. I haven't seen the other campuses but my d has and she says Scripps is really nice and Pomona more "university" distinguished-like but has no idea that CMC is "ugly".

yea. i wouldn't call cmc campus pretty, but the grass is green, things are clean, so it's all good. The style of CMC buildings matches CMC well. Everything looks practical as if it were meant to run really smoothly (which it does). I don't take heart to aesthetics anymore because when I feel like looking at something prettty, I'll just walk across the street to Pomona or Scripps, it's no biggie.

Thing to actually consider: CMC dorms are pretty awesome.

Ugly is definitely way too strong of a word to describe CMC's campus. I agree with most people on Pomona being the best. I didn't get to see Scripps though. It shouldn't matter all that much.. considering they're all right next to each other. So you can go to class/sleep in the dorms at CMC, and go hang out and do whatever at Pomona's campus.

By the way, is it just me, or does CMC have a lot of bugs :o. I was relaxing on a bench over at CMC last week and saw two big, weird looking beetles crawling near me. :{. I can deal with bad dorms, bad weather, but strange bugs get to me :{.

fortunately, it is also very small, and two minutes of walking will put you someplace prettier. the aesthetic shortcomings of the school are heavily outweighed by its academic qualities and basically everything else about it, which rules. apply.

i went to cmc to visit real quick i thought it was average. not too exciting but not ugly. it's VERY green. has lots of trees and grass and open areas. compared to scripps which is just across from it, scripps is prettier in a romantic way. pitzer, which is right next to it too, is just plain ugly. it looks like an ugly desert-like hot thing. cmc is like a good balance.

A lot of the buildings at CMC are not particularly striking, but the overall look of the campus is very lovely, thanks to all the green grass, open walkways, and trees.

It's not that ugly, perhaps just seems like it, because of the recent construction going on there. I think they are demolishing a couple buildings and renovating others. But yea, there's lots of construction everywhere. I think it'll look way better after construction is done.
