CMC or Duke?

Having a really hard time deciding where to apply ED..

Can someone list out there understanding of the differences.
Also how is the cultural scene differ.

I feel like CMC might be too small and too culturally similar (Norcal) to challenge me socially.

Basically, I don't want more of the same..but do like the liberal arts aspect of CMC.
Help?

cmc??? ??? ???

What is CMC?

CMC, I believe, stands for Claremont McKenna College. It’s one of the colleges in the Claremont Consortium (which also includes Pomona and Harvey Mudd.)

CMC’s far away enough from Norcal that it should be a fairly different cultural experience. But Duke, in The South, will be much, much different.

I’m not familiar with either school, but I’d pick Duke as I have a preference for universities. If you prefer LACs I’d pick CMC.

It may depend on your academic and career goals, as well as the net price of each school.

By CMC I mean Claremont McKenna. Cost is not an issue. I want to get an MBA in the future but am unsure about what I want to major in…probably polisci or econ.

In terms of preference for university or LAC, I have absolutely no idea…
Duke is more of a reach for me.

CMC and Duke are two very different schools. Here are some things to consider-

  1. Would you rather go to college on the easy cost or the west cost?
  2. Are sports something you are really into because Duke has many more fans then CMC? For example if you want to go to a school where students attend all the basketball games then go to Duke.
  3. Which school has the major you want? If they both do then which one is better ranked in it.
  4. Do you like the idea of a smaller school with big school resources? if so go to CMC.
  5. Do you want to be at the center if your professors attention meaning not competing for it with graduate students? If so go to CMC.

I could think of a ton more questions like that to ask but those are just five to ask that might help you decided which you would rather go too!

I’ve visited both

  1. Not sure…I tend to like warmer weather so CMC is attractive in that way…But I kind of want to get out of California so Duke is more appealing for that.
  2. Not really into sports. It would be cool to have a good sports scene…but I honestly don’t care that much
    Thanks for responding.

I think both would be stimulating academically. CMC would give me more attention but recruiting would be better at Duke.

I really want to know more about the social differences.
I like the inclusiveness of CMC’s social life…no greek life= open to everyone…but feel like Duke will have more diverse students.

Plz help. I don’t have much time to decide

Don’t apply ED unless you are 100% sure that school is your first choice. So imo you shouldn’t apply ED to either.

No one can make this decision for you. But the schools are so different, I really can’t see you applying ED anywhere unless you pick by coin flip.

I’m suspecting you haven’t visited either campus and you’re trying to do this by remote observation. Bad idea for ED, you really need to visit, otherwise you may wind up with a school you’ll really hate.

Everything about this decision seems to be about what you think what you want and based on paper observations. I understand the desire to get a leg up on selective schools, but this isn’t the way to do it. You also are ignoring the cost consideration questions, which can also be fatal.

Everything about this smacks of Bad Idea.

If you dream to get into the Best MBA programs, Duke is the clear choice here.

According to this site:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/business-school-mba/1224650-top-feeder-colleges-americas-elite-b-schools-5.html</a></p>

CMC very rarely sends grads to a leading MBA program while Duke is well within the top 10.

Should I have tofu or pot roast for dinner tonight? No one can advise me about choosing between two such completely different alternatives–I have to choose for myself. Same with CMC vs. Duke, except while I have to eat something for dinner, you can avoid the whole problem by not applying ED.

I’ve actually have visited both schools and I know I would be happy at both. They are my top 2 choices. Obviously I don’t want strangers to make the decision for me, I was just looking for some more information on the social scene at Duke, and the contrast between both schools in general.

Theoretically, CMC and Duke are closer in size if you consider 5 Claremont colleges together which have around 5,500 students.

By reputation alone, Duke is a jock-oriented, strong Greek system, Div I school. CMC is a mellower, non-Greek, Div III school. Both are very strong academically. I’m sure there are exceptions, but stereotypes happen because they are by and large, true. Academically, you can like both. Socially, I don’t see much overlap. If you didn’t notice that on your tours, you weren’t paying very close attention.

MrMom62, do you know what the word “jock” means or have any idea of it’s connotation? No one ever that I have encountered described Duke as a “jock-oriented” school. Having an emphasis on sports doesn’t make a school jock-oriented same way being an athlete doesn’t make one a jock. That stereotype does not exist because most of Duke’s athletes are very academically capable (as I have seen and experienced first-hand) and everyone knows this.

And I acknowledged that. They’re smart jocks, but they’re still jocks. The Duke lacrosse scandal, which was truly unfair to the athletes involved, would not have happened if not for jock-culture. Can you imagine such a scandal ever breaking out at CMC? It’s almost beyond comprehension.

And by jock-culture, I mean an environment where athletes are held up to be demi-gods, where they are granted special privileges and deference to the rules of behavior everyone else has to follow.

One of the reasons I’m unsure about Duke is because on my tour, despite paying close attention, I didn’t get to see a significant amount of social activity as it was a Monday morning. I think I’m leaning towards CMC. Duke would give me a better shot at good MBA programs but I don’t think thats enough to validate my choice to apply ED over CMC. I do worry that CMC is not as well known as Duke, but what can you do.
