CMC/Pitzer

Well, I am looking for match schools, and I think admissions-wise Claremont and Pitzer are matches.
However I am looking at going into the sciences, specifically biology, and I was wondering how strong their programs are? I don't particularly want to take their website's word for it since obviously they would promote their own programs.

Thanks!

Hmm, well from what I know (I applied to CMC as well when I was a senior) CMC is more well known for poli sci/ international relations/econ. I think Harvey Mudd would be a better fit for you out of the Claremont Colleges (they specialize in science and engineering, I am not sure what Pitzer is known for.) Of course, Rice has a very good biochem/bioengineering program, though I see you know that telling from your screenname ;)

Harvey Mudd for math/science

Go to the alphabetical list of colleges and look up each of the Claremont college forums. People ask all the time what the differences are between the five schools, and you’ll get first-hand information there.

Which is appropriate for you depend a lot on where your stats are. For Biology, Pomona may be the strongest but the combined science program of CMC, Pitzer and Scripps is also strong. Mudd is more engineering/computer science focused as well as math. Pomona is stronger for math as far as I can tell. However since there is cross registration for all of the schools a lot depends on the feel of the school for you and the fit.

Let me clarify what I said above. Mudd is the strongest for technical science and math. Pomona is probably stronger in math than the other Claremonts. I didn’t mean to say that Pomona is stronger than Mudd in math. Sorry about that.

Pomona and Harvey Mudd are by far the best for math, Pomona strongest in chem/bio/ earth science, with Mudd being the strongest in engineering and physics. CMC, Scripss and Pitzer combine to form one science department called the, Joint Sciences, so it doesn’t matter if you go to Pitzer or CMC for science. However, there is a vast difference in the type of students that attend each college. If you really want to major in a science and have the stats for Pomona or HMC take a crack at Pomona’s or HMC admissions as well as CMC/Pitzer’s.

CMC’s stereotype is pre-professional, conservative, and Bro-y
Pitzer’s stereotype is hippiyish and liberal
