CMC VS Berkeley

Hi all!

So I've been having a long internal debate with myself lately. I got into U.C. Berkeley a few weeks ago, and I got into Claremont McKenna as of this evening. (still waiting on Pomona)

I'd be transferring into either schools as a junior, and I'm interested in everything from psychology to political science to computer science. Emphasis on the computer science. However, I come from a very small school of 400 students, and I'm unsure of my ability to transition into the hustle and bustle of Cal. I like having flexibility, and I recognize that as being a reason why I'd prefer CMC.

Wondering if I can please get your input on this? I'm primary interested in knowing about CMC: a) quality of academics relative to those at the Berkeley, b) quality of peers (are they obnoxious and snobby about money as my friends at Pomona tell me?)

Thanks in advanced!

i think cmc offers a smaller intimate community that appeals to me because i like small schools before big schools. i think its a matter of where you see yourself.

I'm not sure if you will find a great computer science department at CMC, but you might be able to go to Mudd for your CS degree so that could work. I think Claremont is on par or better than Berkeley due to the fact that although Berkeley may have greater researchers, CMC has amazing teachers and scholars who do their own research as well. The quality of education at CMC will surpass Berkeley if you are interested in intense, discussion-based classes and close relationships with faculty. The Berkeley professors will be more concerned with their PhD and grad students.

I find it very ironic that the students at Pomona think CMCers are snobby, but I'm slightly biased. I can only speak for myself when I say that when I visited CMC and Pomona, CMC felt like home and the students at CMC were friendly, outgoing and welcomed me. Pomona seemed to have a great facade as the campus is nice, but it didn't seem real to me if that makes sense. I didn't want to go to the East Coast because of the elitist attitudes and snobbery, but Pomona embodies this. I'm an incoming freshman at CMC and the students I've met are down to earth, brilliant, and truly care about using their education to make a difference (or make money...). In my opinion, CMC and Pomona both look for very different types of students based on leadership and how you want to use your education.

if you want a good education, go to cmc. if you want a good degree (easy name recognition) go to berkeley.

well i am a claremont resident and i would choose berkeley over cmc. i think you will get bored of cmc because theres nothing to do in claremont, its only a small college town. also, the campus is really small if you wanted to know
