Hey guys,

I got into all four of the above schools. I was quite shocked, to be honest because they were all reaches and my plan was that I would go to whichever one if I happen to luckily get into.

But I got into all four and I am quite torn. Any advices?

I want to study Art and either Econ or Bio. But I am still kind of undecided.
I have never experienced a winter with snow before
I am an International student.

Thanks!

Wow those are all AMAZING schools congrats!! Lets break it down:

CMC has amazing academics and a strong Econ department. It is also part of the consortium which means an abundance of other resources. Extremely vibrant social life (that means lots and lots of drinking…CMC is known to be a party school–if thats not really your thing you might want to reconsider). Warm, sunny, gorgeous LA…no need to worry about winters. Laid back atmosphere.

Vassar is an awesome school! I got into it last year and almost went. The student body is extremely welcoming and soo nice. Vassar is very alternative which some people might find “weird” (I personally didn’t, but whatever). VERY liberal and fun though. They like to party but in moderation. Academics are obviously top notch, known for a strong emphasis on humanities. 30 minutes outside of NYC which means you could find amazing internships. OPEN CURRICULUM!!! This is a huge deal–you can take whatever classes you want, no restrictions or requirements. Fabulous reputation.

Midd gorgeous, but in the middle of nowhere…literally 3 hours from civilization. If you’re into being isolated on a campus you might like Midd. One of the biggest % of international students in the country…but beyond that, I feel like it isn’t anything special. Vassar and CMC are wayyy better and offer better college experiences.

Tufts social life blows beyond belief…I would not recommend it, its full of snobby, judgmental, self righteous northeastern trust fund babies who are bitter that they didn’t get into an Ivy. Students are very apathetic and indifferent, not very passionate about anything. Their main goals seem to be becoming powerful and rich. Way competitive. My best friend just transferred out of there, she was absolutely miserable. I wouldn’t even consider Tufts, honestly.

Hope that helped! I’ve visited all 4 schools and definitely liked CMC and Vassar the most. It seems to me that you should chose between those two, they have the most happy students and offer the most healthy balance between academics and social life… but that’s just my opinion :)

I think dreamer121 is too harsh on Tufts. His friend wasn’t happy and that has colored the report. I only knew one trust fund kid and the rest of us were on financial aid. Science there is good - I know people who went on to med school or vet school. A friend of mine from Tufts went to Harvard for her MBA. The Boston area has lots to do - restaurants, music, museums, shopping, history. The art program is connected to the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, if you are looking for something quite in depth.

Thinking of art, I would think Vassar. The campus looks lovely. There is an area near the campus that has somethings for the students. The main part of town is a bit rundown. If you want to go into New York City, there is a train but I imagine the fares add up. Probably nice for a day trip on the weekend.

Middlebury has the most gorgeous science building! No other building has looked as good since. The town is cute but small. The surrounding countryside is beautiful. The leaves changing color in the fall is a sight that draws tourists to the state.

CMC is really strong with the econ and government types. I would look carefully at whether or not you can do art there. You may have to take those classes at Pitzer or another of the colleges. NO SNOW except for the view of it from campus - the mountains in the winter are capped in snow. The town of Claremont has a number of little restaurants and shops and ice cream/fruit smoothie kinds of places. There is a train connection to LA, but public transportation in LA is not extensive. Urban sprawl defines the region.

Good luck making your decision. You have some really nice choices.

thank you guys so much!

and i am now choosing between vassar and cmc

The train to Vassar is more like an hour to an hour and a half. Doesn’t take away from the school but if NY is an attraction, it is not an easy ride.
Before you decide against tufts read the tufts thread on this board of nothing else. There are a very wide variety of students, large percentage of international students. Students there are very passionate about a lot of things, and the academics are amazing, as is the advising and the university’s commitment to its students.

My son definitely not a trust fund child) has had a great freshman year.
Boston is the ultimate in college towns, and there is plenty to do and see.

I feel Vassar would be the better choice for your interests. I don’t tend to associate CMC students with the type who would be interested in pursuing art as a minor or a major. If they did they’d have to take it at one of the other school’s campus.

You can dual major with Econ or Bio at CMC and then do the other half in Art at Pomona, Scripps, or Pitzer. CMC is a fantanstic school! (although I can’t say I know much about Vassar)

My aunt went to Vassar and University of Chicago.

Among LAC’s Middlebury and Vassar are the schools I would choose.

They are beautiful and outstanding institutions.

Tufts is highly respected.

CMC is a fine school for economics, but is that what you want?

They are an applied school and do well in placing people where hands on learning is important.

When your audience claims MIDD is way out there, how does that calibrate in your mind?

I attend Williams College which is a premier institution for the Arts. We recognize MIDD as a great school. They are one of our rivals.

If I were in your shoes with those choices and your probable majors, I would reconsider MIDD and Vassar as your final choices.

I do not know who you are, but you must ask yourself what it is that you want from a school. MIDD has an excellent international reputation and many international students.

Look carefully before your leap.
