According to several sites, CMC's student body is roughly 50% Californian. Does anyone know if this makes it easier to get in from a distant state than from Cali? I know it's private, but geographic diversity may come into play. Any opinions would be appreciated.

well, i'm from a 300 person town in Arkansas and i got in, so ya i think u may be on to something. or maybe i'm just extremely lucky lol.

it definately reduces your competition if you are applying from the east coast

When my son visited, they claimed they don't factor in geographic diversity. I don't believe it - so, I'm guessing it's beneficial to hail from an under-represented area.

it's 48% Cali, 52% out of state. However, out of state includes international. ANd international takes up like 9%.

current cmc student here...i know a lot of people from california....but i also know a lot of people from different areas of the country/world. the large CA population is helpful in that CA students have cars most of the time and they know the area. Not such a bad thing. You will still meet people from all over. The guy who lives down the hall is from Thailand, the girl across from me is from the Bay Area (northern California), and I have lots of good friends from the DC area. It's still pretty diverse.

Thanks for your responses. It doesn't sound like non-Californians are ostracized or singled out, or that there's a rift on campus between the groups.

How ethnically diverse is CMC? Is it common to see an international student or a minority group in CMC? And is there interracial mixing or do people often just stick to their own kind?

My roommate is from Phoenix- first generation from Croatia. My suitemate is from Apple Valley, CA. My other suitemate is an international student from India.

I am an admitted student from New Jersey.

CMC sent me a course catalog sometime during the application process and I happened to stumble upon the School Profile.

It had information on geographic distribution. From what I can recall, CMC currently has approximately 30 students from New York (which seems like a reasonable number given their size). However CMC only has 3 students from New Jersey. Did this help me get in? I don't know. I got into other liberal arts schools on the east coast like Amherst and Bowdoin, but this may have been a small factor.

I am more amazed by the fact that CMC only has 3 New Jerseyans considering the relatively high number of New Jerseyans who apply to prestigous schools.

Sadly, I won't be attending CMC next year because they were so unreasonable with financial aid.

I'm sorry to hear that the finaid didn't work for you. And I'm sorry you chose not to attend CMC in the fall- good luck with everything.

As for NJ, who knows... I don't think anyone knows how the admission office breaks it down. I do not think they, pre-getting apps, determine how many students from each geographical area will be admitted. There are readers for different areas at large and the readers forward apps of students they believe would be good students for CMC. If I'm not mistaken, NJ and NYC are together geographically....

sorry to bump an old thread...

this is a stupid question, and i know that admission depends on a ton of factors, but let's just say nobody from my state has attended CMC since 2002.

could this maybe help?

It won't hurt but it really has to do with you. They aren't going to admit you based on your geographical area. They don't care that much about representing every state. But it might help a little.

i mean, it might help, who knows. cmc could easily have on their pamphlet that they have all 50 states represented, but its not really important. cmc is cool like that - not incredibly concerned with being able to say pretty meangingless things in admissions brochures and instead admitting a class thats gonna go on to make serious bank and fit in at cmc really well
