CMU 2007 Auditions?

I fell very strange but I cannot seem to figure out CMU’s audition process…the link on their website does not seem to work(too early???) and I cant get a clear picture of how to set up an audition appt anywhere. DO we apply first? As it means travel and we are trying to set up fall/winter auditions, I really am searching for information…HELP!

It might be too early for CMU's registration. read this earlier post about it from SuzieVT:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?p=1308656&highlight=cmu#post1308656

I think it is too early. I remember that CMU's application was the last one my daughter received in early fall after several requests. You do apply first and send in an audition fee as well as the application fee. They give you many dates to choose for an audition, but not the time of day. (This form is included in the application.) Since my d was auditioning for 9 schools at Unifieds (all with appointments), she penciled in the general time of day (a.m. or p.m.) that would work the best for her in relation to all the other auditions that were scheduled. (Plan on spending 3 - 4 hours for the audition.) The time my d requested was honored. We didn't have the problem that Suzie had, but it did seem that the processing of paperwork was very slow.

Mikksmom, My child didn't do Unifieds but I can comment about lining up auditions on campus. Each college seems to do it differently. Some you can line up the audition dates by phone even before your app is sent in. Others require you to indicate your audition date preferences ON the application. Some require an application be filed first. Some allow calls only after a certain date. CMU's appointment making (at least in fall of 2004) required it to be done ONLINE only. However, the online form went up rather late-ish. I filed/paid online the first day they had the forms go up online. That day was October 7. I recall the school saying it would be up Oct. 1 but it did not become available until the date I just cited. So, keep watching their site when school starts and also you can call and ask when the online form will be posted to register. As I said, make sure you check the "appointment making" procedure with each school as they differ quite a bit.

Phew! At least it isn't me! I appreiciate all the information on CMU - it seems like they are just very late in posting (as are many of the larger schools programs).

Thanks again and if anyone finds out more, please let me know!

Mikksmom, as long as you are keeping on top of procedures and dates, along with dates when appointments can start to be made, you'll be totally fine. Making a chart of these dates and procedures and then mapping out which are your first/second choice audition dates for each school, with a calendar, combining weekend dates with schools in proximity NOW is good. However, I can tell you that we did not start making appointments until September. If schools allowed appointments via phone before apps, we did it then. If a form had to be filed, we did it then. NYU doesn't allow calls until Nov. 1, if I recall. I just wrote how CMU did it online not until early Oct. I can tell you that we got ALL of our FIRST choice dates by making appointments either starting in Sept. and/or whenever that school first began allowing appointments, etc. So, if organized, as you seem to be, just call or register online or send the form (whichever the case may be) as soon as they allow you to do so and the early fall in most cases is absolutely fine.

I appear so organized BECAUSE I am inherently a disorganized person! :)

I really appreciate you taking the time to provide some encouragement and advice for me - this is getting overwhelming already and it hasnt started yet! My darling D and I spent her one day home from CAP (which she adores BTW. Makes sense - put an MT kid in NYC and they swear they died and went to heaven!) on Sunday reviewing materials and trying to pencil in dates that worked on the calendar(which we bought to do just that). Working in between committed show dates, work schedules and tentative winter items is grueling! It is nice to know we are not behind at least!

Thanks again!

Juggling the calendar and fitting in all these trips is indeed difficult. Mapping the year out ahead of time is the best way and then being sure to make the appointments as soon as they are allowed to be made (again it differs, but early fall in most cases works), usually works out. Yes, it is a VERY hectic year. And yes, these are the kids involved in shows and various training classes, etc. What you can do is....because you will have most of these appointments in place by October, is to let directors, etc. know of the travel college audition dates at the time your D auditions for any shows, or when rehearsals commence, etc....same with dance/other teachers. Most seemed to understand that this was something a kid HAD to do and allowed for it. Obviously, if college auditions are during "hell week" for a show, it wouldn't work too great. My D was rehearsing shows during the college audition season but it worked out and the college auditions were not around the time of the actual productions. Actually, one week following my D's final college audition in March, she was seriously injured from a car wreck and so she was out of her shows for the rest of the school year. She had to be replaced. Luckily her college auditions were over and she recovered in time to start college. So, unexpected things happen but planning it out ahead of time, it usually all does work out. My D was also away the summer before her last year of HS and didn't start applications until school began. However, we did have it organized and mapped out and kept to a timeline. How she got it all done, who knows, given she was in a show far away all fall, created/directed another show, etc. The applications/auditions all seems overwhelming on top of all the rest that these kids do but it does all get done. Keeping organized with a time line of tasks to do week by week, month by month, and time managing it, will work out. The kid has to do all the work. However, there is an element of secretarial work like making appointments and travel plans and a parent can do that working in concert with their student. Glad your D is enjoying the summer program. I have to say, that when my D hit college and NYC, I had the same comment about it being like being in heaven (for her!).

PS, I am sorry that my PM box fills up quickly and I see you tried to PM but email works better for me.

That is great to know! I have requested several times for materials from CMU and I have yet to receive anything. Will they send come fall? Shall I wait longer before I request again?

MT D-mom's learning curve is at a 90 degree angle. A few questions:
When using comm.app.w/supplement essay and deadline is not till Dec.01- Am I to encourage my daughter to turn in paperwork early-so she can sign up for audition-or can she wait till Dec.01-how does she sign up for the unified auditions? We live near SF. thank you for your help!!

APOL - You need to sign up for unified auditions with each school, so do CMU the same as you would if on campus.

If I remember correctly, CMU is a school where signing up for the audition and turning in the application are independent of each other. I believe that CMU's application is due 12/1 for all MT / drama students. Some schools require the paperwork before you can sign up for auditions. I think CMU is such that they tell you to allow so many weeks, but 12/1 ends up being the due date.

Hey, I was wondering how much time we should allow for a CMU audition if we do it at unifieds. I plan on audition for 8 or 9 schools so the more I can get in at unifieds I figure the better. I know the website recommends that you allow for something like 3 to 4 hours for the audition but would they do it any diefferently at unifieds?

Just thought I'd let you parents of seniors know that the audition registration page is up on the CMU website. I just registered my D. Scary! This is all starting to seem a little too real after over two years of reading CC--it's happening...wow!

I just registered, too! When is your daughter doing it?

P.S. I know exactly what you mean about finally having that first audition confirmed; it's a little scary...

nydancemom -
Thanks for letting us know about the registration! I can already tell that we're going to need help keeping up with this. My D just signed up for a 2/4 afternoon slot and she's thrilled. I agree -- Wow!

It does seem real now doesn't it? D is going to Pittsburgh on Feb. 25... hope the weather cooperates!

i'm doing pittsburgh on november 12th!!! ahhh so excited!

I'm sure I read it somewhere that CMU is at the Unifieds In L.A., but they are not on the list for Feb,11th.

Also is it better to go to the school to audition if Dance is you strongest talent?

i don't personally think so... the schools evaluate dance at the regional auditions as well.

The dance combination at the regional auditions is the same combination they teach at the auditions on campus. And there is also a faculty member from the dance program, most likely Judy Conte, at all regional auditions. So, it really doesn't make a difference, although I would suggest visiting the campus (if at all possible) so you can see the facilites, sit in on classes, meet current students, etc. Good luck!!
