Does the interviewer send feedback to CMU ? I mean, is it a formal interview ?

They have a form to fill out, but I think that’s mostly just to make sure both parties are involved in the interview. It’s mostly for the interviewee’s benefit and supposed to be their way to get a glimpse at CMU when they can’t make a trip out to the campus itself.

They do ask the interviewers if they think the student should be admitted, but I can guarantee you it has no weight based upon the students I’ve interviewed and which got in and which didn’t, lol.

here is the form! https://admission.enrollment.cmu.edu/pages/alumni-interview-report

if that helps!

I do about 7-10 alumni interviews each year and its primarily to gauge interest and passion. CMU is an awesomely quirky place and the alumni interview is just another data point to see if CMU is a good fit for both parties. My interviews are pretty open ended and about an hour long. Since I only interview ECE/CS folks, we get down and dirty into the tech pretty quickly. And this is where I love to see the candidate’s authenticity, passion and character. I write a pretty detailed interview report and am very candid as to whether I think the candidate would be a good fit. That being said, I have done probably over 30 interviews and only 3-4 candidates got accepted.
