Cmu cfa --> scs

So right now, I am an admitted student trying to decide which college to go to. I am admitted into the College of Fine Arts as a music major and I am wondering how hard is it to add a computer science major once I get on campus?

Extremely difficult. Admission to CS at CMU is a whole different world than other majors.

Hi!

Transferring into SCS and double majoring in CS are two different things; here is a guide that will be helpful: [url = https://csd.cs.cmu.edu/guidelines-transfer-dual-degree-minor-and-additional-major-cs] CS Double Info

I know quite a few people who are not in SCS but double major in CS; it’s no easy feat. CMU SCS is pretty darn difficult. Of course, don’t let this stop you from trying! We are the best CS school in the nation :wink:

Let me know if you have more questions!

There are several different approaches to adding CS to a Music (or other Arts) degree program at CMU: you could add a CS minor; add a second major (which is like getting a “big” minor, you’ll still only earn one degree); add a double-degree (i.e. earn two degrees); or transfer into the hybrid BCSA (Bachelor of Computer Science and Arts) degree program.

Other than the CS minor, all of these options require an application process that is conditioned on your strong performance in the first several introductory CS courses. The BCSA option, which the above commenter forgot to mention, is specifically tuned for the needs of students studying arts disciplines, and is designed to be completed in four years – unlike the double-major or double-degree, which is a 4.5-5 year haul.

Your best bet is to start down the path of the minor by taking introductory CS courses, and see if CS is really what you wanted. Note that there are other degree options within the School of Computer Science, including minors or double-majors in applied fields like Human-Computer Interaction, Artificial Intelligence, or Robotics, that you might decide you prefer to ‘pure’ CS.
