CMU Class of 2025 - Regular Decision

Great to hear it worked out for your child. I told my son to keep all the options even they may not look attractive now. So he will be on the waitlist although CMU is not in his top three options. After all, it doesn’t cost anything. Everyone is taking different approaches.

Congrats! Hi can you please share your stats, thanks!

Congrats! Can you please share your stats. Thanks!

I went test optional for CMU since they don’t superscore. I go to a very competitive school in GA and have a 3.9 GPA (Top 10% of my class). Strong ecs too. Also got into UT Austin Mccombs and Umich Ross.

Thanks & good luck!!!

Can anyone help understand what a priority list means? What are the chances?

@GPVee Check this - Common Data Set 2020-2021 - Institutional Research and Analysis - Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Planning - Carnegie Mellon University (view first-time-first-year-admission.pdf). Based on 2020 data, 2021 chances can vary between 4% and 8% (depending on how many people accepting a place on WL). Mathematically, in 2020, about 6% of admitted candidates didn’t join and hence these 6% of seats (288 in number) were filled by WL students. 2019 and prior data are worse and these numbers halve…give yourself 2% to 3% chance.

In the FAQ about waitlist, it shows around 2-3% acceptance on average in the past 5 years. The number was higher in 2020 which was the same for most schools. Honestly, the chance is approaching zero. We can hope or dream, but won’t bet a cent on it. We will register for the waitlist on 4/9, delete the bookmark on my Google Chrome and forget about CMU  .

Here is the link for your reference:

On average, they take ~110 students off the list, while it was 288 in 2020. The number in 2020 may not be representative due to the unpredictable pandemic at the point. The visibility now is not much different from a normal year. Of course, the kids applied to more schools, there might be some concerns on yield. Who knows.

I don’t think that’s how it works. Colleges admit more applicants than they have spots for, based on past yield. So for example, if history shows that only a third of admitted applicants enroll (that’s typical for CMU), then they admit thrice as many applicants than they have spots. So if an admitted applicant does not enroll that doesn’t mean a spot opens up. A spot will only open up if more than the expected number of applicants turn down their acceptances.

BU, Northeasten, and UMd are great choices!

It’s hard on these kids to feel so much rejection from just a few institutions. But the reality is that kid like yours is still going to attend a top 10% college and will likely (hopefully) find that he fits well there. That’s what the college search is supposed to produce! Good luck!

That would be great news bc what I currently have is a no where close to doable. Thanks so much.

Does anyone have advice on negotiating financial aid? Mine came in double the NPC. Called admissions and they advised me to write an email further explaining my circumstances. From the tone of the phone call, they seem a bit apathetic about it.

Did everyone else get the waitlist email?

Just got my acceptance letter in the mail. It was not the usual fat letter that they send out, which I thought was weird.

What are the chance of getting accepted from priority waitlist?
