I was just accepted to Carnegie Mellon, and I am interested in the MechE major. I am visiting the campus this month, but I was wondering if anyone has done CMU’s additional robotics major, and if so, how did you like it? If you haven’t, has anyone done any sort of double major with mechanical engineering being one of them? What was the experience like? Was it helpful in the long run? Any sort of insight would be helpful. Thanks in advance to anyone who replies!
I think you can do it, but it will be very academically challenging- expect 50/60 unit semesters. On the other hand, the minor in robotics is MUCH more manageable
I’m a rising junior at CMU and I’m in the MechE-Robotics double. It’s certainly a doable combination, you should never have to take more than 5 classes (four technical and one humanities) per semester which is relatively standard at CMU. The robotics minor is also a good option for MechE’s in that it gives you the same background in controls and kinematics but doesn’t include artificial intelligence, computer vision, mobile robotics or the Robotics Capstone.
