CMU, Duke, GaTech, BU, Miami Chances

m an IB student, I was born in Georgia but Im not a resident as I live outside the US.

Im a full IB Student: -

Chemistry HL
Economics HL
Design Technology HL
Mathematics Methods SL
English A1 SL
Arabic B SL

My SAT I scores are: -

Total 1250
Math 720
Verb 530

EC is quite good, have tonnes of Model United Nations Experience, Including Thimun and being President of The Security Council (and Founder) in our local Conference which involved 350 Students from around the world.

I also have other EC activities in other fields. Many activities including the CAS- Creativity Action Service types. Im generally good in the EC criteria.

My GPA is around 3.7, I think thats how it is unweighted.

Not planning on retaking the SAT. Already sent scores and everything.

What are my chances for those universities, [Already applied]

CMU, Duke, GaTech, BU, Miami

Thanks.

Ferret24...you take a VERY rigorous schedule full of challenging and uncommon classes (like Arabic B Sl and Design Technology HL), so that's a big plus. The math score is pretty respectable, but you absolutely MUST raise that verbal score to at least to the upper 500s-600s, even if you are an international student.

Your EC's are pretty good, and you've shown real committment to the Model UN with the leadership experience. It also looks great that you took the initiative to create an organization. What are the EC activities "in other fields" that you didn't mention?

3.7 is a decent UW GPA considering your demanding course scedule.

Here's my Safety/Reach/Match breakdown:
CMU: M
Duke: R
GaTech:M
BU: not sure...
Miami: S

Thanks, I have loads of other activities, including acting in plays, Global Young Leaders Conference, Basketball, Badminton, Designed websites for the school, Manufacturing Items for the Disabled, An activity called Horseback Riding for the Disabled.

And so on.

The conferences are:

American International School (Cairo) Model United Nations 2003
American International School (Cairo) Model United Nations 2004
Amman Model United Nations Conference 2002
Amman Model United Nations Conference 2003 (As an Organizer)
Amman Model United Nations Conference 2004 (As president of the SC)
Global Young Leaders Conference 2004

I have recieved Awards as well: -

Endowment Fund Award (200 JD's Approx $285) for achievement in Information Technology.
Principles Award for academic achievement
Head of School Award for academic achievement

I doubt Ill have enough time to take the SAT I again. IB is very demanding, I hope it wont hinder my chances, because I applied Engineering to all the schools, and I think the math score is sufficient.

But also, Im an american citizen born in georgia, So Im considered American, not instate, I think thatll help.

Whoops, I'm sorry!

Well, if English is you first language, and you intend to apply to very competetive schools like Carnegie Mellon or Duke, you should raise your verbal score to the upper 600s to 700s. A 530 might gravely hinder your chances of admission. Even for engineers, it is very important to have strong verbal skills. Don't worry, it can be done--I raised my score in that section from a 550 to a 750. If you don't have the time to take the SAT I again, than send a graded paper with teacher's comments to attest to a good command of the English language.

Yeah I probably will send my IB English A1 World Literature Essay, but I think Ill get in regardless to the less competitive schools on the list.

No one else?

Cmu M
Duke R
Ga Tech M
Bu M
Miami S

1250 SAT isn't a match for CMU. But if your EC's are good as you say I'd say CMU is reach/match.

Problem is that theres so many amazing candidates at my school, that I dont stand out compared to them.

What would normally be a safety has become a Match, and what would normally be a match has become a Reach.

people from my school got into BU with very low scores as low as C avgs (but SATs were all 12s at the lowest). Miami is tougher than you think. On the online application it says you wont be considered with an SAT score below 1320 but it obviously can't be VERY true because someone from my school got in on 12s.

Yeah BU is an obvious backup in my opinion, they accept loads of people from our school. Miami has gotten tougher over the past two years bu the 1320 is definately untrue.

I would like to relax the statement, "you MUST raise that verbal score." Those scores are respectable and well above average even for domestic applicants.

Thanks because I dont plan on taking it again, I have good marks in English A1 SL and I believe that will compensate.

bumpity bump

bumpbump bump

Got Miami University today.

Not a big deal it was a safety anyway. I just want GaTech and Im happy.

congrats :)

Duke seems a big reach, but I think you have a good shot at the others.

Congrats on Miami- it may not be a big deal, but its always nice to have an option. I know a girl who got rejected from ALL of her schools. She was an idiot, but now she is a clinically depressed idiot.

"She was an idiot, but now she is a clinically depressed idiot."
lol! way to be comforting there ::TJ:: :D j/k

My question is if Ferret can get into GaTech with those SAT scores. My SAT scores are very similar to his as is my course rigor. However, I have fewer Ecs. My heart is set on GaTech and want to know if I'll get in. I know my essay will not be a problem, so what do you all think my chances will be to get into GaTech?

SATs are a bit low, but his math was good. GPA is good and so are ECs for GaT
