Cmu ece

Hi, I was wondering about CMU ECE. How hard exactly is it in comparison to SCS and other programs at CMU for admission? Also, when you apply to CMU and list ECE within CIT as your preferred major, are you automatically considered for other majors within CIT and "undecided" CIT also? Or must you put that as a separate alternate major?
Another question is if you do make undecided engineering and not ECE, how easy is it to switch into ECE? I've seen on other threads that most, if not all, do not have trouble but what is the process and how hard is it really?
I would appreciate any input. Thanks!

yea i would like to know this also. any help plz?

Current ECE here.

I got rejected from ECE but accepted to CIT (restricted admission) but ended up getting into the program in my freshman year. Statistically speaking, going from about 500 interested kids to 150 per graduating class, seems like a long shot, but pretty much everyone is required to take the Intro to ECE course, which is a weed out course. I remember people started dropping out like flies after the first homework or so haha. So how easy? As easily as you can survive the intro course and get an A in it. :)

In terms of admissions, I don’t think anything compares to SCS. The acceptance rate to SCS is much lower, in my opinion (5000 applicants for 150 spots in SCS vs <500 applicants for 150 spots in ECE)

I don’t think you list ECE as your preferred major, you just apply to CIT as a school. You may put CIT as your preferred school (list it as your top choice), and when you apply, you just check the box “Consider me for ECE” or something, and that’s all. Whether you get accepted to CIT as restricted or as regular, you all come in as “undecided”. Nobody has declared their major officially, but a lot of people already know what they want, so they take that introduction course in their Fall semester. In march or so they start sending out polls to declare your engineering majors.

Yeah, it doesn’t actually matter if you intend to go with ECE or not when you apply to CIT. I applied to CIT with no intention of going into ECE and was accepted into the school without restrictions. Didn’t matter since I knew I wanted to do Materials Science, anyway.

My daughter got admitted to CIT ECE under early decision. When she applied to CMU, she applied for CIT, with preferred major as ECE. The admission notice says she has the opportunity to chose any major in CIT.

Her admission to ECE is confirmed, right?

BTW, she got admitted to UIUC (cs), UMICH(cs), Purdue(ce) so far.

She has been admitted HOWEVER, if she takes the intro to ECE course and does poorly/shows no interest, the ECE dept has every right to decline her a spot in the ECE class.
