s wants to study Econ. compare to schools like UofM, NYU, is CMU HSS worth it? is HSS less known only because CMU's engineering overshadowing? we want to understand whether HSS is a good choice academically. any information is appreciated

Haha this is a bit late but HSS is actually very good. I’d say it’s on par with UMich and NYU. I know CMU’s Comp Sci, Engineering, Business, and even Musical Theater programs tend to overshadow the other programs but it’s actually a very well-rounded university. Plus, HSS isn’t as hard to get into as the School of Compsci or engineering or business or Music but it’s still pretty good and it actually is a great school for people without straight-A’s but still with respectable gpa’s and SAT’s. I believe the CMU HSS admittee average gpa is around 3.59 and around 680’s for all of the SAT sections.

I was actually wondering about this, Ivy. Thank you :)

The workload differential between HSS and nearly all the other programs on campus is astounding. It’s not that these aren’t really bright kids-- it’s just that some of the SCS/MCS/CIT/ARCH/ART majors refer to them as
“H and Less” because they simply don’t even touch the workload that these other majors have to handle. The HSS workload is a typical college load-- it just looks so “easy” when you consider that a typical problem set in the STEM majors will take upwards of 20 hours.
The HSS majors are still top notch- that is why CMU is #23 overall - that’s really outstanding in the grand scheme of things. The admission stats are solid.

Keep in mind, you don’t pick a school b/c of perceived “prestige” – you pick it b/c it’s a great fit and you will receive an outstanding education. Only you can determine fit-- but there’s no major at CMU for which you will not receive a great (pricey) education.

Economics is jointly offered by H&SS and Tepper and, in that sense, if differs somewhat from other typical H&SS majors. The B.S in Economics is also far more math-oriented and probably has a much heavier workload than other H&SS bachelor’s degrees. You can also double major in economics and mathematics, or economics and statistics if you meet the necessary requirements.

CMU economics is actually top notch despite being underrated in most rankings.
