What is a cmu oncampus interview like?

fun, laid-back. I recommend it because it gives them a chance to know you, and you get a chance to meet the admission folks.

I spent most of the interview talking about movies and music. They already know all of your academic qualifications.

I believe that not having an interview kind of brings up a red flag on the student. It is recommended and people who skip the interview may be seen as not being "interested" in matriculating if offered acceptance. Example: Schools like GWU/WUSTL care so much about interest that they keep count of how many times you contact/visit the school.

Interviewing is definitely a good idea if you can, and I think CMU is more likely to give you merit money if you do (I don't know anyone with merit aid who didn't interview), but you don't absolutely have to. I was accepted to both Rice and CMU without an interview (in both cases they're optional), though I did go to a CMU info meeting, and I had a bunch of connections to Rice and one of my letters of recommendation was from a Rice grad.

well, in my experience an interview wasn't necessary. I got merit aid, and didn't set foot on campus or talk to anyone until after I was accepted (regular decision).

lol same here. I didn't interveiw or show any interest. In fact my essay for CMU was what i considered to be my worst. I did it as part of the Common APP lol

Lol well I'm going to the interview in 3 weeks, so I was wondering more about the interview than if I should do it.... lol what's done is done, now I must live with my decision...

what kinds of questions do they ask... because I've only been to two interviews... one for an internship and one for a high school.

which is most like cmu's?

internship: she kept asking if you and another group member are butting heads what do you do to solve this problem... blah blah blah

school: if you could be a fruit what would you be... again blah blah blah

Mine was more like what do you do at school what do you like about school what are you interested in blah blah blah and then what do you want to do at CMU what you do like at CMU and general conversing about why both I and the interviewer really liked CMU. Just go there and assume you like them because they went to CMU and that you can always talk about the college itself if all else fails. (Of course I have to say that it helped me to have an interview with an alumnus who lives in my town and grew up there as well... if your interview is with the admissions dept it could be very different)
