When do you find out how to take the math placement test?
What is on it, calculus, trig? what kind of score places you in what kind of class?
Thanks for any feedback

You'll find out how to take the placement exam this summer when you get a pile of paper or a link to a website from your advisor. There are 5 sections; the first 2 or 3 o precalc stuff, the last 2 on calc stuff. CMU names its calc classes slightly weirdly; CIT/MCS/SCS people don't actually take the classes called calc 1 and calc 2, but i'll refer to their classes as that because it just makes life easier. You can place into calc 1, a class 1/2way through calc 1, calc 2, 1/2way through calc 2, or whatever comes after that for you (CS majors don't have to take any more calc and often choose to take matrix algebra instead freshman year.)

I remember rushing to finish the test before I caught a train. Section 5 was a little rough around the edges. :D A 5 on the BC test and a 780+ SAT Math will give you any calc 1/2 credit you need, assuming you did at least OK on the placement test.

780 on the sat 1 or the sat 2. Cuz i got a 760 on math 1 but an 800 on the second sat

Math 1. Math 2 is a joke.

Another quick question-- I took the Cal BC exam last year and only got a 4 (because I had TWO PAPERS AND A TEST the same week... but I'm not bitter.) But now I'm taking multivariable calculus and doing pretty well... any way I could place out of that? Would that be a terrible idea?

CMU doesn't really place people out of multivariate/calc in 3D, but you can still place out of calc 1/2, even if you didn't get a 5 on the AP test.

I got a 760 on the normal sat math (out of 800/2400) but an 800 on the math 2c. does that mean that they don't count?

High SAT scores will get you INTO CMU, but if you want to place out of classes, you need the placement exam and the AP test. Remember all the calculus questions on the SAT? Oh right, there were none.

haha thats true thanks for the feedback..just a nervous prefreshman

Actually it's possible to get credit for multivariable. Make sure to bring a syllabus from your high school course and talk to the Math Department head. My roommate got credit for taking 21-259 by bringing in his high school syllabus.

say hypothetically you get a 5 on the ab and a 5 on the bc, what can you place out of or go straight into mathwise as a freshman

The placement test was out of 40. I got a 33. However, I also got an 800 on the SAT Math section. This last fact shouldn't matter, but it did, for whatever stupid reason, considering the SAT has nothing to do with calc. A 33/40 isn't a good score on the placement test, but I was in a hurry, etc, and I knew I could fall back on my SAT and AP test, so I didn't sweat it.

Anyway, my combination of 5 on BC Calc, a 33 on the placement test, and an 800 SAT Math section (not Math 2, although I did 800 that too) placed me out of calc 1 and 2 (21-120 and 21-122) and I started in 3D calc (21-259) my first semester.

thanks cmonyuk
do u know around what time ppl can start taking the math placement test
also, will getting a 760 on the math 1 keep me from placing out...really, bcoz that would suck.
neway, thanks for the feedback
