CMU or Princeton?

Im interested in Engineering, and one of my teachers suggested Princeton. However, I dont want to apply to soo many competitive schools, and I would like to keep my list down to 10-11.

Whats CCs opinion, CMU vs. Princeton. Which one is better on the whole?

edit also, what about aid at both schools?

On the whole, no doubt, Princeton.

I’d be surprised if you received any serious replies different from mine.

That’s not to say cmu isn’t an excellent school though

One thing to consider: You cannot transfer into Princeton, but you can transfer into CMU. So if you think Princeton might be the school for you, apply while you can!

Is this a serious question? Which one you apply to depends on your stats, Princeton is unrealistic for most.

For someone deadset on engineering CMU offers a stronger program and more peers majoring in engineering. However, Princeton’s engineering is still extremely good, and offers much, much better FA. That being said, your stats may not be in range for Princeton as hmom acknowledged.

As it stands right now, Princeton is unrealistic. With URM status and if the OP raises his scores to 700+, he might stand a chance.

nk9230- How many reaches do you already have? If you have a fair amount of matches and safeties, adding a reach wouldn’t hurt (assuming you did raise your scores).

I got a 6 on Maths SL exam for IB- im pretty confident I can raise the Math II. I have been studying using for both Math II and the SAT II all summer, retaking both this fall.

I do have a fair amount of matches and safeties, so I dont think an extra reach would hurt…
Does being an URM really help that much? I would rather be accepted at a school based on my Academics and ECs more so than being black.

If it helps, I can PM my full stats. I would rather not post that on CC anymore.

Okay, I think I’ve seen a great deal more of both these schools than any others in the country. I’m going to CMU and Princeton is in my home state, I’ve visited Princeton once and been to the town two other times. I think you need to consider the culture you want to be in. CMU is a college filled with nerds, I went to an accepted students luncheon the other day, it was the tightest collection of nerds I’ve ever seen. If you’re a nerd like me, CMU is a place you’d fit in quite nicely.

CMU is a little out of the way from Downtown, but it is in the city. To get to New York from Princeton will probably take you at least an hour and a half on the NJTransit (and will cost you a fortune, at CMU the buses are cheap.)

CMU is a better school for engineering.

Carnegie Mellon is only marginally better in engineering, and Princeton is stronger in virtually every other field. Fit aside, Princeton is the better option, particularly if the OP decides to switch out of engineering (which is statistically likely).

As the OP prudently noted, it’s more a matter of likelihood of admission than of academics.

Do you plan to retake the SAT I? I would be more concerned with raising that than the SAT IIs. You might also try a practice ACT; some people do better on the ACT than SAT.

As it stands right now, your scores are extremely low for Princeton. According to its IR data, only 2-4% of students enroll with SAT scores that low, and those are almost certainly recruited athletes and developmental admits.

I’m not trying to burst bubbles, but it is important to be realistic.

Of course I plan on retaking the SAT I, I need to get a 2100+. Period.

I understand completely. It would be a waste of time to apply to schools like Princeton, when my stats scream one word: REJECTION. I plan on visiting both schools to make my final decision, and then let my retakes of the SATs decide. There is the possibility that I won’t like either CMU or Princeton once visiting (Besides, Im not sure I want to apply to 3 Ivies).

There is a typo in the post, it was supposed to say Math II and SAT I. I have been studying for both all summer.

Consider applying to both. They both may be reaches for you, and you might as well cast your net as wide as possible. Yes, your URM status will give you a bump. (Consider Penn State’s engineering school and Case Western if you’re looking a little lower - you’d definitely get a scholarship at Case.)

I think Im going to visit all of my top choices first, so I can then weed out which ones I didnt really like. But I am applying to Case! The App is free, and they have good Engineering.
