Maybe someone out there can help me with this decision. I am looking at most likely a MS in MechE. I have full funding from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), and 1/2 funding from Stanford. I did my undergrad at CMU, and the offer is very enticing. However, CMU's program is much smaller and less developed. Stanford has its own great benefits - and it is higher ranked. Anyone have any advice as to which to choose?

Are you interested in a PhD at all? Stanford has a rep for making it hard to go from MS->PhD

i'd choose Stanford without a doubt.

Stanford. How is this even an choice?

Stanford is expensive. I wouldn't fault him for going to CMU, which is a damn good school for Mech E. And besides, if he has any intention of getting a PhD, stanford would not be a wise choice as Stanford Mech E is known for admitting mainly its fully funded Master's students for a PhD. If he were to go to Stanford and do poorly, that would be the end of his doctoral hopes.
