CMU or U Mich or UIUC or G Tech or Purdue

Hi Guys,

I have been admitted as an international student in computer engineering at CMU (Carnegie Institute of Technology), U Mich, UIUC (Computer Science), G Tech (Comp Engg) & Purdue (Comp engg with $ 10k scholarship).

Will appreciate if you can help me with my following queries:-

What is the average starting salary at these schools.

Will it make too much of a difference if I select Purdue (as its coming out to be the cheapest) when compared to CMU/U Mich/UIUC.

Between U Mich/UIUC/G tech which will be a better option from career perspective as I intend to do my MBA after working for 4 years preferable from the Top 5 business schools.

Will really appreciate if some information can be given in this regard.

Thanks…

Congrats on your acceptances.

1. What is the average starting salary at these schools.

All are top rated computer engineering schools. They will all provide same opportunities with similar starting pay...my guess is neighborhood of $55-75k avg.

CMU = U Mich = UIUC = GTech = Purdue

Sorry, I did not mean to edit. I left your post unchanged.

If you're really into Comp. engg, then CMU is the best choice (Ranked 2nd I think after MIT)...But it is very expensive..
After CMU, I'd definitely choose GTech as it has almost just as good Comp Engg as other schools, and it is cheaper also..Plus good climate, big city...But it's all up to you..

Kumara, how can #2 be by far better than #5, (UIUC), #6 (Michigan) and #7 (GT)?

MK, if finances are an issue, go with Purdue. If your folks can afford all of those schools, go for CMU or Michigan. CMU is slightly stronger in Computer Engineering but Michigan is more well-rounded.

mk1980. Ask yourself, "which of these four schools will help me secure a top job in my country?" Prestige of a university is very big in Asia. It doesn't make much sense going to a top rated school that your future employers might not know, or have heard much about.

Thanks Alexandre, my main objective is to get a good & a decent paying job. Will it make too much of a difference if I opt for Purdue instead of CMU/U Mich/UIUC.
Also, I intend to do my MBA from US again from Top 5 schools, so will it again make a difference if I attend Purdue instead of other options that I have.
Pl. advice...

Hi Alexandre,

In my thread: UT-A vs UIUC vs UMich...computer engineering, I have been advised that quality of education is in all these institutes is the same...that i should forget the quality factor and decide based on " fit".

So how come here, people say CMU> UMich>Purdue as far as academics go ?

Does the same hold true for UT-A vs UIUC ?
