CMU Phone Calls 2015

no email

@vocal1046‌ and @tmygirl‌ - My S just received the email from CMU as @shopforpunky‌ mentioned. I am sure it is coming.

Gotcha. Thanks!

I just checked on the general forum for Carnegie Mellon, and it appears that everyone that applied regular decision to the any department at the university got that form letter from admissions this afternoon. I think we can probably still expect Barbara and Gary to make the phone calls to Acting/MT students soon. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/carnegie-mellon-university/1706803-carnegie-mellon-class-of-2019-rd-discussion-and-results-thread-p7.html

Oh, sorry, mine did a few minutes ago. I’m wrestling with financial aid stuff and very distracted.

by which I mean the email did arrive, not anything else

This wait totally kills!

Yes. The waiting is torture. Last year D had a good freind who applied for MT and her portal changed to Acting the week before calls were made. She wound up being WL for acting. But the portal did not show the WL until it went live after the calls. It was a very long week of wondering. But not so bad for my D because she never made it to all three people, so she kind of knew it was a no. Anyone have portal changes? If you auditioned for MT, you could be considered for acting and it should show up in your portal, but who knows…could be different this year…

Why does Kaf bother to interview the candidates after auditioning them , if she has no intention of sending them on? Doesn’t she really yield a lot of power in the decisions over who to cut ? Where does Gary stand if he is supportive of a candidate ?
I am just shocked that they operate this way and as a professional myself I can’t imagine how this serves them.
My S had a fabulous audition for both Gary and Kaf and actually came out feeling he was being considered …
Kaf saw him second and had him do all three of his monologues and then asked him to sing his entire ballad a capella and then sat with him for over 10 mins. Gary had him sing his entire ballad not his 32 cut as well as his up tempo cut… And spend at least 15 mins with him .
So because he wasn’t passed to Barb , are we to assume he isn’t being considered at all?

Yes, It is very frustrating this process. I know that there has never been a “documented” case of someone getting in that hasn’t been passed to all three, but who knows? Maybe there is one out there. NOt everyone is on CC. I actually appreciate that CMU does spend more time with the applicants. I think about how many auditioners they see, no pre-screens (was it 2,000 this year?) and manage to acutally seem like they spend at least 10 min comibined with them (at least)… And we really dont know what their process is… I actually find this entire process of auditioning somewhat ludicrous at times, ridiculously subjective and I honestly don’t think anyone will ever be able to know what they are thinking about our S or D. I’m sure it is a puzzle…what they type need, what they are looking for…ECT… But what I do like about CMU is at least you are seen by more than one person. I know my S had a hard time with the auditions for schools that just had one auditor. He always came out saying “what if I looked like that one guy in high school that was an asshole to them?” can I say asshole? sorry if I can’t. I’m not calling anyone an asshole, so I guess I can. It just comes down to this…(and, as you are a professional, I know you know this already) There are/were so many talented kids flooding the audition rooms…and it is about Talent…but it is also so much that is out of our control… LOOK and LUCK. Like winning the lottery…literally. But, Voiceteachermama, I feel your pain more than you even know.

Oh!!! CC doesn’t let you say asshole!! it automatically corrects it! that’s funny. Well, the word started with an A and ende with an E. hahahhaha

I think that CMU really takes their responsibility as educators seriously and it comes through in their audition process. My impression was that while they know the number of kids they take is absurdly low and that they will not be able to offer spots to many deserving kids that they really take the time to recognize each applicant, connect with them and offer some words of advice/support. That’s what teachers do. It seems to me that, in part, this is what makes all the kids fall in love with this school. It also makes it sting that much more when 99% are told they were not selected. But, as a parent, I at least felt that with my Ds who auditioned (one several years back who was not selected, the other who is now waiting to hear) that they were seen and heard and treated as more than a number. As far as guessing the process, it helps pass the time as we anxiously wait, but no one but them knows the method behind the madness. Cupcakes and wine are helping me get through the process of waiting…so that’s my two cents! Good luck to all!

Heard it with 3k, as in 3k families have a quarter of mill to spend on BFA??? We had a different person thrown into
the mix. Who knows? There were blizzards and people sick. Good Luck to all.

@boom22 lol. You crack me up.

I think you are spot on and at least our kids can look back years later with their heads held high, knowing they gave it their all.

If MT really is their dream, they will find way, accepted or not. As a parent, I have no regrets in letting my D explore her every option. I’d feel worse leaving her “What if?”

Plus, the audition nationwide “tour” provided so many great bonding memories for us - I’ll forever cherish them.

@4thtime - We should get together for lunch sometime. LOL

My S enjoyed the process for CMU. He did get passed from Barbara to Kaf to Gary. But the reality is a long, long shot. He did say it was the most fun he had at any audition, with the things they asked him to do. Gary was even blunt and said he was a little flat on one of his notes. Ouch! S said that was fine he still enjoyed it. Good luck to all.

Everyone at CMU is very, very, complimentary, and really strives to make the audition pleasant as well as a learning experience. To their extreme credit, and though they have 2000 auditioning, they do listen to, and take notes on everyone. Sometimes they give them direction to get them to “loosen up”. Not necessarily because they like them enough to offer them a spot, but because they want to give both parties the opportunity to see what a difference it makes in their delivery.

Barbara in particular is very passionate about “teaching” at the audition. Because so much attention is given so many (as opposed to other schools who shout “next” before they’ve finished), the attention given, esp. in comparison to other schools, is often construed by students as a possible acceptance. (In my opinion, this is why nearly everyone hangs on to the hope of being admitted to Carnegie despite the odds. They like a lot of kids.) The auditors sometimes make statements that are taken as compliments, but likely are not. For example, someone might say “I see an actress.” Some would take that as a compliment. But really, what may be meant is that they are seeing someone “act” when the point is not to see that.

But more often, they give straight-up, face-blushing compliments. They try to instill confidence. They know how much their opinion and approval matters to kids, and so, they take the time to find something positive about auditioners, and they tell them. This often has the unfortunate side-effect of giving hope of admission, when in fact, there is little or none. I am not saying this is your son @voiceteachermama. No one knows if he will be admitted except the auditors. I am merely saying that they profusely compliment and spend time with dozens, probably hundreds of kids, and only 7 boys are ultimately admitted to the MT program. So you just have to say, what are the odds?

This team is the epitome of professionalism and grace, and it is upsetting to me that their professionalism would be questioned because they do take the time to care and get to know those auditioning.

In answer to your question, it has been discussed here many times. And it may very well be that your son will be admitted even though not passed to Barbara, but in the typical “experience” that has the possibility of meeting with success, he likely would have been passed back to Barbara to do his monologues. But who knows, maybe they were running behind that day, or Barbara wasnt feeling well or had an appointment and they decided not to follow typical protocol that day? Its possible. They did spend a Lot of time with him.

I agree with all of you that CMU offers a wonderful audition to each and every student and I have also enjoyed the memories I have made doing the audition tour with my S. Thank you also for your empathy and support

I’m a little mortified with myself and how much I am looking at CC. It’s like a drug, an addiction and the CMU calls thread is my Crack.
But at least it is helping the moments pass until “the baby comes”

I know when I had my children, they were much sweeter than this wait.
