CMU Pre-College Questions

I finished my personal essay a few days ago, and it’s not bad but it’s not really good either. Does the personal essay play a deciding role in admissions to the summer program? I have good grades- over 4.0 gpa and straight as, and a pretty impressive resume. However in my personal essay I didn’t focus on what I did in theater but rather my characteristics and how I rise up to challenges. But I still don’t think that my essay is very good.

Also, I’m planning to send in my application next week, is that too late? Because my school won’t update its transcripts for the 1st semester until the end of this week.

And I remember reading that in the evenings in the summer program, students take workshops and master classes like tap. But what else is there besides tap? Are there any classes with like actors or any business of the business classes?

My son applied to the CMU summer program even later than this 2 years ago (probably mid-March), and he was accepted. He has a friend who applied in April and was admitted. You are NOT too late. But, the sooner you apply, the sooner you get a letter acknowledging that you are "in."

My son ended up going to an state-sponsored scholarship program that year, so he applied again last year, and he attended CMU. It was an amazing experience. He is an actor, but the acting and MT students are combined for most classes, except for things specific to MT, like dance, where the acting students take movement instead.

There are special workshops and classes in the evenings, one with entrance by audition only. They may vary a bit across the years. . .I do not know about classes specific to MT, so someone else will have to post that info; however, for acting there were topics such as "improv." I know that others have posted extensively about the CMU program, so try a search!

I wouldn't stress too much over the essay. Maybe have someone read it over for grammar. . .it would certainly not hurt to have a more objective perspective. I can't remember, now, what the essay prompt was; be sure that if there was one, you have responded to it in some way. While I can't speak for the CMU admissions folks, I do not believe the essay is a MAJOR part of the selection process for the summer program. Your grades are just fine, of course. I believe my son sumitted a prepared transcript that did not even include 1st trimester grades from the current year. I would guess CMU just wants to see some evidence that you will be prepared to work in the program. I know of other kids who had no where near a 4.0 GPA and were admitted and did well at the summer program.

Good Luck!

I know that there have been some discussions about this on another thread, but I have not heard of anyone, who was interested in attending, completed & submitted their application for CMU's summer program and did not get in.

NMR - I know your D attended this program last year. Did they give you any indication that they turn a lot of people down?

I think that this program may be selective in that, like others, it is pretty costly and intensive, and so it may automatically weed out those people who are only looking for a "mini vacation that includes some acting training, a dance class here or there, and a bit of singing" :).

I have a 3.3 GPA would that be too low to be considered for this program?

If you really want to go, give it a try! If you apply early, you'll hear early--I don't remember when they first review apps, but I think it's sometime near the beginning of March. Then you'll know if you have to go for something else!

Hi! I attended the CMU Pre-College program this past summer for Musical Theatre and it was an awesome experience. I've auditioned for their Musical Theatre program as well as their vocal performance program (they are in two separate/independant schools within the University) and both auditions went extremely well. I would definitely recommend the program to someone serious about spending A LOT of time working on your performance abilities. They consider your grades and essay, so do your best to make them as positive a reflection of you as possible. However, don't be discouraged if you feel you may not be qualified academically as they may find your artistic portfolio/experience outweighs your lack of academic achievement. Also, it is a conservatory program, so your grades will not be a huge factor if you audition there for college.
Good Luck!

MTgrlsmom, I actually know a very, very talented kid (now in a BFA program for MT) who did get turned down for CMU Precollege. This girl also was a top student. However, I don't think the fact that she wasn't accepted had anything to do with grades, essays, talent, etc. I think she merely sent her application after the progam was already filled. That is why I would recommend that anyone who wants to attend get their packet of materials in ASAP. I honestly don't believe the program is all that competitive, admissions-wise, as long as there is space available.

NMR - thanks so much for pointing that out. I think that there is an increasing amount of BFA prospects applying to summer programs these days and it is definitely helpful to know that it is best to get those applications in early as it is getting increasingly competitive out there :)!

ughhh im freaking out. i applied to syracuse , emerson, northwestern and CMU for programs this summer, but im like dying to go to CMU butttttttt i didnt have my psat scores since i was sick the day it was supposed to be taken (even though its not mandatory to take them, unlike the SATS), and CMU asked you to send in your PSAT score. Hopefully they'll be ok with it!
Btw, can anyone discuss who knows of, or who has been to the program how they work the whole audition thing for the actual MT program at the school at the end of the summer. Supposedly i heard they audition everyone at the end of the summer and sometimes take kids for the MT program!

I wouldn't worry too much about the scores. . .My guess is that they don't really look at them anyway.

My S attended CMU pre-college last summer. It was WONDERFUL and it really gets you ready for the audition circuit. They audition everyone at the end of the program. The summer faculty, plus some that don't do summer teaching, judge. You get written feedback on your audition, so that's really helpful. And, sometimes, students get an offer for admission. Last summer it seems that 2 students got offers--both were MT summer students, one got an offer for MT and one got an offer for ACTING. I do not know if the MT student accepted, but the student who got in for ACTING is going to CMU. This is not a reason to attend the summer program, however. It is a lot of stress, and, really, only a very few actually get accepted. Plus, you would miss the audition circuit! Believe me, that process builds character--both for you and for your parents!

jake, did u apply for any other summer programs? why would u recommend this one? i got into this one, but i also got into tisch cap21 for thesummer and i dont know what to do! was there anything at all that bothered you about the program?

i would say CMU is a lot better! its the best MT school in the country

What does “MT” stand for?

MT=Musical Theatre :)
