CMU Priority Waitlist

Catchastar: thanks for the great info! Is your child currently a student at CMU? One question for you: was your child offered admissions from off of the waitlist or straight admission? The reason I ask is because I’m wondering if the review you mentioned is something that would be done only after someone is actually offered a spot or if it can be done while a person is on the waitlist? My D did receive better scholarship amounts at several other schools, so I guess those would be our bargaining chips if she were lucky enough to get off the waitlist. Thanks for your help!!!

CMU requires more information than most schools for financial aid. With the odds against my son, we did not file the information until he was accepted and it took collegeboard a little time to process the CSS profile and the tax returns/W-2’s. However, once that was done - BAM. They had a decision. Have not received packet in the mail - yet but received it online. Going through request review process which starts April 15. I found the gentleman on the phone with financial aid extremely informative and helpful.

AdaQuince: Your welcome. Happy to provide input from a parent perspective.

Momarmarino: Yes, my child is a current MT Major at CMU. My child did not come off the wait list and that is exactly why I suggest a call directly to CMU. I know how much every one of you wants to do the “appropriate” thing and not offend anyone, or somehow hurt your childs’ chances of getting in, if you ask something you think might even in the slightest hurt their chances. But I think this is a very fair question and I can’t imagine anyone not wanting to answer such an insightful inquiry. However, I do think you won’t get a true honest answer until/unless your student is admitted because they don’t know who has or has not accepted yet, and all the packages that go with them. That said, acceptance is entirely up to the School of Drama. I get the impression there is definitely some “behind the scenes discussions” that go on between the two Dept (Financial Aid/School of Drama). Bottom line, if CMU wants your kid, they will do what they feel they have to do to allow your student to attend (within reason - mindful they have all your financial info (and yes Grayhairedman they ask for much more than other schools - exhausting) so they know what you can/can’t afford!!)

My daughter just received priority waitlist status. Do you have any idea how many students each year get in off the priority waitlist? How many students per year do they offer it to?

@pursuethedream … I don’t know how many are excepted off the priority waitlist, but I assume it is totally based off of those who decline their acceptance. I can tell you my S, was excepted off the Priority waitlist along with another male student (2 years ago).

My S auditioned for MT and when he came off the Priority waitlist, he was initially accepted as an Actor, not MT, which he was OK with, because the actors and MT’s for the most part, all attend the same classes and he knew either way he would get excellent training. Then, in July, he was notified (before school started), they were changing his status and placing him into the MT program, they just added another spot.

So there is a chance… and I think like someone else already posted, you would be notified first week in May… My S was notified on May 6…

Hope that helps and Congrats on your daughter making the Priority Waitlist, that is great accomplishment :slight_smile:

Thank you so much-she is very happy to have made it that far!!!

@pursuethedream Congrats to your daughter!! There are at least 4 girls confirmed priority WL for MT that have posted on CC. Not sure how many others are out there? My D knows one girl from last year who came off the waitlist, and thinks there might have been two, but she is not sure. Best of luck to your D!!! (BTW - We met the two boys who came off the waitlist the prior year when we visited - they were tour-guides @inspired59!!)

@deelight … That’s wonderful :slight_smile: … Hope you enjoyed the tour.

@Inspired59 I’m not sure if my post was edited or I messed up in error…but I had originally typed they were exceptional tour-guides! They did a great job of answering questions and keeping it real!

According to threads of past years, PWL is such a joke. So long, CMU

According to successful applicants who made it out of the PWL in the past, they sent an essay after they accepted to be on the PWL listing all additional accomplishments/grades/ internships/ lab exp/ jobs since putting in their application on dec 31st. Some even got additional letters of recoomnendation to make their spolication stand out. Good luck to those waiting to hear back.

I don’t think the last two comments were intended for CMU school of drama applicants, specifically Musical Theater. (Just sayin’)
