CMU Priority Waitlist

@terr24lr Idk dude, but there’s no way she has the means to be able to predict that…

I predict 4 or less total based on all the departments they said are full already.

@lolcollegeh This is making me feel grateful that my son did not get onto the SCS priority wait list. Its just brutal to get such emails, as these posts describe. Other schools manage their wait list with phone calls, and don’t keep sending these sorts of messages. Also, the financial aid packages for wait listed SCS was really odd. Well, they have their ways, and its clearly to compel students onto the wait lists, just in case.

I think its the fact that Carnegie Mellon has too many strict quotas on individual majors for a very small private school. Most schools of their size, even Ivy league do not divide the school into bucket after bucket. This makes CMU’s wait list very complicated. I don’t know why they have so many different criteria say between similar majors such as : physics, math, SCS and EE or CE. The skill sets for math, science, CS and engineering are largely the SAME, good math skills, so to divide it up the way they do is just a way to boost ratings and not in the student’s favor at all and does not make the school stronger, to try to force kids to choose between physics, CS, math and say EE, and actually reject a kid for one major and not the other. It makes no sense at all for a small school to do this.

For sure a physics major needs at least as strong math as any computer scientist, but in fact at CMU, they have a lower standard for physics majors, than Computer science apparently! This makes no sense at all.

Of course U of California campuses also have very strict quotas today on many majors. They are much bigger than CMU though and have mandates to take their in state students, so its a different ball game out there.

Students could avoid schools like CMU and U of Cal campuses, for this reason, as it does not make sense for many 17 or 18 year olds to have to make a decision about majors in high school.

@Coloradomama yeah I would say that they handled this pretty terribly. I was so anxious yet hopeful and then it all went down the drain. Funny you mentioned FA bc I was on pwl and I got $0 aid so that probably was telling me to run from cmu already.
I never knew that! That’s interesting… They just seem very particular. It is definitely a very compartmentalized school-nothing wrong with that, but it makes things very complicated, and you have to know your major going in (hard for a 17/18 year old-as you said)
I wish your son the best of luck!

@terr24lr I predicted 80-90 in my original reddit post due to the different approach the admissions office took this year, but now seeing that every department is full except for SCS… I think it may be another 4-person acceptance. As @Flurite said though, I have no way of knowing if that’s an accurate guess.

I’m enrolled in the School of Design.

@terr24lr Were you on the priority wait list?

Some people have begun to receive their waitlist decisions. How is it looking for you all?

how do we check cmu waitlist decisions again?

PW Decisions will be out on where am I in the process tomorrow after 5 pm est

@MandomeLife How did the folks who have started recieving the decisions know todayas opposed to tomorrow and do we know if they are all from SCS only

@ALeynng - Tomorrow 5pm EST PWL would be just for SCS, correct, given that all schools waitlist seems to be closed

check out reddit cmu thread. One lucky guy got offer but he is going to turn it down.

Im on pwl for Dietrich. I sent them a letter of interest with updates and etc. They just replied saying they updated my file. But they also sent me the letter saying that they were not going to take kids off of the waitlist. I dont know what this means…

@confused498 Yeah I am on the priority waitlist for Tepper
@deeznutshagotee I sent in a letter yesterday actually to the general undergrad admissions and also one specific individual that I did keep in touch with who is on the admissions committee. She emailed me back this afternoon saying that they will not be going through the waitlist for Tepper and pretty much flat out gave me the rejection. I got a email from CMU last week with a list of schools they will not be going through the waitlists for (Tepper was obvi one of them)…with that being said, if your school was mentioned to be one of several that they aren’t looking through then prepare yourself for the likely reality… :frowning: it sucks but whatever. I do think that this year is a mirror of last year where practically zero kids get off the waitlist

lol well we’ll see tomorrow what the school has in store for us priority waitlisters…

I just checked the “Where am I in the Process” thing, and my admission notification button has disappeared, so all I can access is the financial aid notification. Has that happened for anyone else?

same

And now the entire page is “unavailable”

I just got an email titled waitlist outcome did you guys receive the email

Confirmed. It was a “joke”.
