CMU is absolutely my dream, first choice, top school. I am really interested in both the Acting and the Vocal performance major. I am planning on auditioning for both, but I have a feeling I'll be much more likely to get in based on my vocal performance audition. My question(s) is(are): if I do get in the Vocal Performance major is there anyway for me to re-audition for the Acting major? Also, am I allowed to double major? Is it possible for me to get in on both the Acting AND the Vocal performance auditions? Does the musical theater major include classical singing in its requirement (I know that the vocal performance does)? I know all these question marks make me sound frantic and panicky but I'm not, I just have a lot of questions.

Also, any further tips you have for getting in/auditions would be SO appreciated!

Thank you!

I hope someone here will give a more informed response, but I do recall from doing our research a few months ago, that the school of music is completely separate.

You might want to post this over in Musical Theatre where there is a CMU thread.

CMU is currently a very hot school and may actually be THE most selective BFA at present. (Except for Juilliard, where BFA and MFA candidates audition together, so it’s a different sort of thing, and Juilliard doesn’t have MT anyway.)

Musical theatre and vocal performance at CMU are in two different schools and extremely difficult to cross-over as you cannot audition for MT unless in that school. Both acting and MT are one of the hardest admits in the U.S. and have been for years. The Music School is also extremely selective. They will admit a class of twenty or so students for vocal performance… when you split that into four voice types, it is a very difficult admit…my d was waitlisted and never moved off the music waitlist. You pre-screen for an audition slot initially and then audition in person.
Also CMU in the recent past has not been known as being particularly generous with either merit or talent scholarship. We did not quality for any FA, so that is unknown.
