CMU SAMS 2015??

Hi all!
I know Carnegie Mellon has had a Summer Academy of Mathematics and Sciences, but the registration for SAMS has not been listed on their website, along with their other summer programs.
Also, does anybody know how prestigious this program is in comparison to other summer programs such as RSI, TASP, MITES, Carnegie Mellon's own APEA, etc?

I think I applied early January to February for the program several years ago.

For your second question:

I would not necessarily say that SAMS is “prestigious”, but it is definitely hard to get into. Over 800 applicant apply, and only about 50 of them get in.
Scores or your extracurricular doesn’t really matter, because that’s not what they’re looking for. They’re looking for diversity. So you’ll probably not get in unless you’re one of the minority group people. The same applies for MITES.

Most “free” or fully funded summer programs are really meant for those who really need that opportunity, not those who are looking for a program that will make their resume look better…

Do any of you know do u have to be a senior when applying or a junior?

has anyone gotten a letter yet from the program?? it was around this time of year last year

I got accepted.

@jgs107 can you please post your stats?

Okay
African American, girl 17
GPA: 4.35

Essays: my essays were very good one was about my experience abroad living in Japan and the Philippines. The other was about my research with c elegan dpy-13 and unc genes. Also about my experiment collecting and developing maple syrup in biology.
I can’t stress how important your essays are! Good luck to everyone applying.

Accepted

Congrats! Are you going to SAMS too or AP/EA?

I’m going to SAMS, so I’ll see you there! Congrats to you too

Do you know if theres a Facebook group for SAMS 2015?

I’m seriously sitting at the edge of my chair waiting for the letter to come in. If it doesn’t come by tomorrow then I’ll be worried.

No I don’t think there is

Does annual income and ethnicity make a big difference? I’m extremely worried considering I filled out well over $100K/year. I’m also eastern Asian.

Ethnicity yes I would think so since it’s focused on diversity but income isn’t as much of a factor

Got rejected. This sucks:( Anyone know of any other good STEM program that’s still available that I could possibly apply to?

That sucks, I’m sorry :frowning:
And none that I know of with a late application deadline

I don’t either unfortunately. SAMs is the only one I applied to.
Don’t worry, there are definitely more options out there.

kgeleta7160 Where are you from if you don’t mind me asking? What are your basic stats? Don’t mean to be nosy, I’m just curious

I got into SAMS and E2@MIT, and I’m doing e2 because it was my first choice. My stats aren’t that great. What I think really helped were the essays and my transcript, but I’d be happy to share my stats anyway.
