CMU, UPenn, UC Berkeley Chances!

My parents think I can get into any school I want, but in comparison to the amazing students on CC, I'm not so sure! I'd really love to know what everyone else thinks.

I am rising junior in a great high school from Minnesota. I'd like to study anything business related, especially finance or accounting. On the other hand, I would be interested in studying mathematics or economics.

UW GPA: 3.96
W GPA: 4.11
W Class Rank: 10/296 (~top 3-4%)

ACT: composite: 30 (31 E, 32 M, 30 R, 25 S)
I took this once without any prep whatsoever at the end of my sophomore year. I've been practicing a little bit the reading and science sections and I've been averaging a 33 R and 31 S! :)

Course Load: I've been enrolled in the most rigorous classes available. The only AP offered to underclassmen was AP US History (4).

AP Language
AP Literature

AP Statistics
Pre-Calculus (required and advanced)
French III

Race: Caucasian

I really appreciate everyone for reading this! Please let me know if there are any schools besides these that might be a good (or better) match for me! I would definitely be interested in applying ED or EA.

-UPenn (top choice)
-Carnegie Mellon
-UC Berkeley
-UChicago
-Cornell

I will chance back!!

You seem like a strong candidate for U Penn if you get a 31+ on your ACT which it sounds like you are capable of doing. For the other schools I’d say your well lined up to get into them with maybe a slight reach for U of Chicago compared to the rest. Your EC’s are very impressive!

Sent from my Thunderbolt using CC App

Thanks, Eric!

Raise your ACT, and you are in line for solid chances across the board. ECs are great just the academics are weaker for a school like UPenn. If Penn is your top choice, go ED because Penn offers a significant advantage for ED applicants - an edge you might need.

So far, I think I would apply ED to UPenn. Would hiring an ACT tutor for around $100/mo be a good idea, or would this be a waste of money?

I mean, it depends on your financial situation (i.e. if you’re loaded, it may not be a deal), but if you’re a self motivated dude the effect of hiring someone versus doing it yourself with some books will be negligible. If you aren’t self-motivated and you are loaded, maybe it’s something to think about?

I’m in the unfortunate position of being fantastically unmotivated in the matters of standardized testing preparation and also being really freaking poor, so I’m not in a position to make a more specific comment ;)

UPenn: Good shot if you apply ED, and to the College as opposed to Wharton. You’d still have a shot at Wharton, but then you’d have to be in the 33 range of the ACTs.
I think you’ll get in the others.
Chance back if you get a shot. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/1201569-chances-senior-will-chance-back.html

@fdeb35 Thanks, I know it’s a pretty silly question, because it’s different for everybody. I would consider myself very average and middle-class, so it’s definitely debatable.

@dantheman1018 I know I’d have to raise my ACT for Wharton, but thank you for your input! I feel quite confident that my ACT will improve over the next few times. Like said before, I didn’t prep and it was my first time! :)

Chance for more specific for future posters:
-UPenn, Wharton (top choice)
-Carnegie Mellon, Tepper
-UC Berkeley, Haas
-UChicago, The College for Econ
-Cornell, School of Hotel Admin.
-Georgetown, McDonough
-WUSTL, Olin

Thank you everyone!

Bump! I’d still like more input!

I’d say you have a decent shot at all of those schools. If you raise your ACT another point or two you’ll be golden. Plus, UWSTL super scores the ACT which helps immensely.

Great! I’m from a Minnesotan town of about 50,000. Is this going to help me at all compares to someone from a west or east coast feeder school?

Possibly, that is if you are a top student in your region. Most schools seem to have “quotas” on particular regions, typically taking the best from the designated areas.

Bump 10char!

Thanks for chancing me!
You seem to be on a pretty good path to getting into those schools. You’re ecs are nice, just make sure you continue to do well to maintain that gpa and rank. Also brown nose your teachers junior year so you get good recs :o

Thanks for chancing me. It’s a little shaky with that 30 act for the schools u mentioned. A 33-34 act at least will get u far.
Reach for Cornell, wustl, chicago, should get acceptances on the others.
ECs look good.

You’re definitely on the right track. Do well on your standardized tests, and you should be accepted ED to UPenn (pretty high acceptance rate for an Ivy).

Anyone else have thoughts/advice?

Your ecs are definitely good, but I would really work on getting that ACT a little higher. If you could pull it up to 33 and apply ED to penn, that would be great, it would be a surefire target. Otherwise you might just want to try the SAT if it’s not too late, I just happened to like it a lot more. Still for some of these colleges, it really helps a lot to have a clear passion for doing something rather than just leading a lot, so if you can get that across in your essays that would be great also. based on the assumption you get a 33:
cornell - high target
uchicago - low reach
upenn ED - target
wustl - low reach (they have extremely weird admissions)
georgetown - target
berkeley, you’re out of state so i’m not too sure how hard admissions are
carnegie mellon - target

Thanks, tennisboi! Within the next two years, I am going to spend a large portion of my time with DECA and at an internship at a large accounting firm. Would this be a good topic for essays?
