CMU, UPenn, UC Berkeley Chances!

You seem like a great candidate for all these schools! They’re all pretty competitive so nothing is guaranteed, but I’d predict you getting into Carnegie Mellon and having a really great shot at the others :)

This is what you have going for you so far:

 • Solid academics
 • Well-rounded extracurricular activities
 • Good class rank and GPA

This is what may not work in your favor:

 • Your gender, race, and middle class status (which I understand is something you can’t change. But in this recession, being in the middle class is tough.)

This is what I think your chances are:
You have a good chance of getting into all those depending on other factors such as your recommendations and essays.

-UPenn - target
-Carnegie Mellon - target, but perhaps a better chance here than at UPenn
-UC Berkeley - target/reach
-UChicago - target/reach
-Cornell - target

Thanks, LeftBrain. Any further advice?

I’d love to hear more! Sorry for bumping.

Raise your ACT scores a bit and get good teacher recs/essay and I think you have a good shot at those schools. My guess:

Cornell - target
UChicago - reach
UPenn ED - target
WUSTL - high target
Georgetown - target
Berkeley - dont really know
Carnegie Mellon - target

Good Luck!

Went to CMU for business undergrad, graudated in 2009. My advice- go to a cheaper but great public school…do not spend over $40k in annual tuitions. Do that for your grad school if you have to …in undergrad you get pretty much the same experience as any other school, provided you go to a good one and that you are a bright student unless you are at harvard or yale which is a different ball game altogether.

@phetreed Thank’s for responding! Sorry, I was wondering about this before, but what does a target mean? I understand reaches and matches and safeties, but I wasn’t sure about this one.

@Sweetbee It’s great to get some insider advice. You’re right, I have been heavily considering UW-Madison lately. It’s a pretty darn good school and it will not be that expensive with reciprocity.

I got a 32C ACT this June! 35E, 32M, 31R, 31S, 09W. It’s be great if some other people could offer some advice or opinions.
