Cmu V. Columbia

Im junior at high school and planning to apply for Early Decision
to CMU or Columbia.

In the future, i wanna have a career in advertising/ or art directing.
Which one is the better school for me?

Obviously CMU has excellent design program and im planning to apply to the Design school.

But Columbia DOESNT have design major, i think, and then i'll have to apply to Visual arts. How is visual arts program at Columbia?? What do they teach, basically???? Is it just fine arts painting/drawing? or do they have more like design like programs in it?

The only advantage that columbia has, i think, is that it's ivy, and it's in New York. More opportunities

I know the design program at CMU is far better.. but still i cant decide and I want to know what am i gonna end up doing if i graduate from Columbia as Visual art major, not design major..

which school is better for my future career as art director/sth related to advertising???

help!

As far as I can tell, neither program has an established reputation for Advertising.

I'm pretty sure NY is the capital of the advertising world (among other things). So, Columbia is probably the better choice if you want to be at the epicentre of things. But if you feel you can always move into the epicentre after receiving the best knowledge, which might be had at CMU, then you might not want to attend Columbia at all. It's your job to find out about each program until you feel comfortable (visit?) and then make a decision.

As far as I know, Columbia doesn't have THE best art program. It's probably competent like many other top schools, but that's just guessing. Wash U in St. Louis has probably the most high profile art program of the top schools that have art programs.

Columbia doesn't attend porfolio days from what I've seen, so the specifics of their undergrad program/major is not easily accessible. However, they do have excellent MFA programs and their film program is especially renowned.

thank you college-ish.
I agree.. but I still wonder
is it more likely to get a better chance of getting good internships or making good connections if I stay at wherever I wanna work after I graduate?
If that's the case, I think columbia is better but I still have no clue about their program...

I have heard that Columbia's visual arts program has recently improved a lot. This information came from an art prof at Wash U StL. I believe they have new facilities coming online soon as well.

If want ad in NYC why not Pratt, Parsons or SVA. They are better known for art and design and have strong connections in NYC
