I put my major as civil engineering for both schools but I am looking to work with energy infrastructure when I graduate. Is there a better engineering major for that within CMU or Berkeley? Also, Berkeley is generally better for civil engineering(1 vs 10) and related engineering fields but I am worried about the large class sizes and housing. What are the average class sizes for the mathematics and science courses? What are the average class sizes for humanities and social science courses? If I do not need get much out of class discussions, are large class sizes still a detriment to my education? Am I likely going to need to live outside of Berkeley after sophomore year? Disregarding cost, is going to Berkeley still a better option even with the class sizes and housing issues? Do you think there is a significant difference between the quality of the civil engineering program at Berkeley and at CMU?

You can look at the on-line schedules to see class sizes.

There is lots of student housing near campus.
