CMU vs Harvey Mudd (Plus another option)

Hello. Well I got in CMU CIT ECE and Harvey Mudd College.
But I'm not sure which to attend. I know they are both great Engineering schools.

CMU's financial aid came in and it wasn't that great. We had appeal it. Harvey Mudd's hasn't come in yet.

But I also got into Claremont Mckenna College and they gave me a great financial aid package. But I'm not really sure what I would major in there. (Also would I be at any disadvantage by going to a lesser known liberal arts school as opposed to a national university?)

Any comments or advice?
Thanks.

CMU is better than Harvey Mudd, with better opportunities for research and grad school. But if you got better aid from Mudd and it’s a question of money, then I guess that makes that a clear choice. CMC is not really an engineering school and you might feel really out of touch there compared to CMU/HM.

I don’t know if it’s too late, but I disageee that CMU is better than Mudd. Both are good schools, but very different. I would give the edge to Mudd (except perhaps in CS, but my son preferred Mudd for everything).

I always chuckle a little when I see stuff people write about Mudd, about how it’s a “breeding ground for future grad students.” Well, look at its demographics. It’s one of the whitest colleges ever, with like .5% black people, 2% hispanic, a couple native americans, and the rest are Asian and White. I’m willing to bet that Mudders generally are from higher-income families. Also, they offer a general engineering degree. If you major in general engineering, it’s of course likely you’ll go to grad school because what you did was non-specific. This is of course one opinion, but I think it’s something to be considered.

If you want to become an electrical and computer engineer, there is no doubt that CMU is a much better choice than Harvey Mudd.

“Much better”? I think you probably don’t know much about HMC.

Well, for everyone that’s saying that CMU is much better than Harvey Mudd… shame on you; most of you know next to nothing about the latter.

I’m not suggesting the opposite (the two are actually pretty comparable) but it is true that Harvey Mudd has next to no diversity. If you’re not a white male, you may feel out of place. That being said, with better aid I’d probably chose Harvey Mudd.

CMC is not even comparable.

“Also would I be at any disadvantage by going to a lesser known liberal arts school as opposed to a national university?”

Disadvantaged for what? CMC is a decently respected liberal arts school and is a very strong feeder into top law schools. On the job hunt, it may be somewhat weak if that’s what you’re concerned about.

National universities are huge, and that’s why they’re well known (heavily redundant I know). But within engineering circles there are very few people who would dare look down on a HMC, Olin, or Rose Hulman grad. Go wherever feels the best because in the professional world it’s more or less the same degree.

second CMUCompfinance’s post. Throw away rankings for engineering schools because most of them are excellent, but in particular a lot of them are phenomenal at one particular discipline. CIT’s specialty is ECE and you would be in good hands if you stuck with CMU over HMC in this particular case. ECE not your cup of tea? Go with the broader education of HMC and specialize later in grad school

Don’t necessarily worry about which school is going to be perceived better. Both schools have fantastic reputations within the engineering community. The bigger question is which school you’d fit in better. CMU’s obviously going to give you more classes to choose from within ECE, and if you’re very interested in that field, you’d get a lot more stuff to choose from. Same with the research in the department. If you’re more interested in getting a broad engineering background, then Mudd might be a better choice.

Guys, this topic is two years old. Whoever OP is, he or she is long gone. Some random HMC poster dug it up for no apparent reason.

^Ooops. Well done kate, I’m an idiot.
