CMU or JHU for pre-med? Which ones better? More importantly...where will I get a better college experience?

JHU defff. no doubt. CMU dorms suck...JHU has better dorms.

As for experience, its what you make of it.

JHU is higher ranked but CMU is better for computer science.

I go to JHU and I'm from Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh's a friendlier and safer city than Baltimore. Also, there's more to do in the immediate area of CMU (Oakland and Squirell Hill) than there is in Charles Village. Pittsburghers have more respect for CMU students than Baltimoreans have for JHU students, if that matters at all. However, in terms of nightlife, Baltimore is a more exciting city than Pittsburgh and the job market is better on the East Coast. The weather's nicer too. Both schools are stressful for science and engineering majors, but JHU is more competitive. CMU's student body is more liberal than Hopkins'.

I really appreciate what you all are saying but what about pre-med...? Where will I get a better education for medical school/prepare me for the MCAT's?

Johns Hopkins

Is it true that the pre-med's there are quite mean and do not want their peers to succeed? I have heard time and time again that JHU is a VERY cutthroat school...I'm really scared...

Definately not. The entire pre-med cutthroat myth apparently comes from some book about Hopkins published in the 70s. I'm taking pre-med classes like Organic Chemistry right now and I've never seen any of this crazy cutthroatness that people talk about. Lots of people work together in study groups to study for the exams etc.

I have posted this a few times already...but feel it is the perfect response to these posts on choosing one school versus another --

The best advice I can add is to take the time (if possible) and visit the campuses. Walk around and see if you can see yourself there for four years. Speak with the current students and see if these are the people you want to live and debate with for four years. Meet the faculty and question whether or not these are the people you want to learn from. ETC....

There are a lot of similarities of the schools you are looking into, and also big differences (beyond just location). To learn more about Hopkins I really encourage you to check out the JHU message boards (http://messageboard.chatuniversity.com/jhuboard/) and our student blogs (http://hopkins.typepad.com/julia/).

Invest time in this process and you will make the right decision. Obviously money always plays a factor and you should continue to have that discussion with your parents. But in the end don't rely just on the comments of some anonymous message board -- check out the school's websites, visit the campuses, and in the end you will make the RIGHT decision.

Best of luck.
