I'm literally torn betwee these two choices.

I've been accepted to HSS and CAS for NYU.

There is a high chance that I go and chance my school (or at least attempt to) since I'm undeclared in both anyway.

I know this is a CMU thread, so people will probably be biased towards Carnegie Mellon when I ask about these two choices.. So I want to ask you guys to tell me the pro/cons of CMU based on your personal experiences...and why you would recommend CMU, etc.

are you happy with the campus life?

overall classroom experience.. ?

basically, the only thing I'm worried about is that CMU seems more of a techy school while the closest I'll probably get to a "math" kind of major is economics or switch into Tepper.. and some people seem to have never heard of carnegie mellon..!!

also, can you include what school/what major you're in :D thanks!!

if you’re looking for a math major, why not… study math in MCS? It’s a major in that college. Comp finance in Tepper would also be a good track, but it’s highly selective, and econ in HSS is also a good course of study.

the thing is, I’m almost 100% sure I won’t go into a purely math-sciencey major. as i’ve mentioned, the closest I’ll get to math is econ or business…

i don’t really know how to word this correctly but… - i really like cmu, and if i were to choose one school over the other not based on fields of study, etc. I prob. would choose carnegie mellon. it’s just that if i decide to go into humanities, I feel like nyu may be slightly better in the long run because cmu is much more math-sciencey.

CMU has more of a campus than NYU and is not as hectic as NYC, more laidback which is good for a student. Student body at CMU is more technically oriented while at NYU I would say student body is more humanities oriented

honestly if you’re looking for humanities, a lot at CMU are fairly new and aren’t well gravitated yet, but many of them are also very highly respected. Creative writing, psych, pre-law (EHPP) and linguistics are considered to be serious fields within HSS, as well as the foreign language department. If you’re looking to get a philosophy degree or something-- might want to look elsewhere.

EDIT: And no, many people switch from HSS econ to Tepper. It’s a pretty common path.

NYU doesn’t have a campus. For me, that’s a huge turn-off. I didn’t apply specifically because I didn’t want to walk past panhandlers and hobos on my way to class. One of my friends who toured said she felt like she was going to get raped just walking by…

In contrast, CMU does have a campus, and may offer a more “normal” college experience.
