CMU vs RPI for Engineering

I am really new to this forum so please bear with me. RPI is one of the schools my junior d is considering (received rensellaer medal). I feel with her stats that RPI is a good match (class rank 7/550 unweighted; 3/550 weighted); GPA uw 3.99/w 4.15; SAT's (retaking) 1940; moderate EC's. What do you think her chances are at CMU engineering? And does CMU give any merit aid. How do the two schools compare, in your opinions. Thanks.

I don't know much about RPI, but I can give you some info about CMU.

First of all, it won't hurt to get those SATs up a bit. The higher the math score, the better. The rest of the statistics, look fine. One thing I want to stress is that CMU, unlike other schools, doesn't really weight stats as high as other factors (ECs, essays, etc.). I think they really want people who will "fit in" rather than having a horde of 2400-scoring-lemmings.

CMU is unique in that it accels in my different areas.
For example:
Drama
Art
Design (top 5)
Computer Science (#1)
Engineering (top 10)
Physics
etc.

This allows for a diverse course load for the student. If your D comes here and takes advantage of the courses available, she will leave a very well-rounded and (hopefully) happy individual. It's very difficult to find a school that's so highly ranked in so many diverse fields.

The engineering department is great. The course-load allows for many diverse courses from the different colleges on campus (art, drama, computer science, physics etc.).

I'm not sure where this post is going, I think it'll be easier if you gave some specific questions.

As for merit aid, CMU does give it - but not easily ;-).

Thanks for skipping the top 5 business school...

Lol, is Tepper top 5 for undergrad? I thought it only made top 10 undergrad but like number 3 grad. I guess it all depends on where you look for your rankings...

Tepper is #5 tied with Stern (according to USNEWS). The Wall Street Journal also ranked them very highly.

How about engineering (original post)... :-) Thanks. Just wondering how much better than RPI it is ranked in engineering. Thanks!

Better pay and better companies (Google, Microsoft, IBM, Amazon along with Merill Lynch/Morgan, etc) to start with but of course this is from the persepective of a business student.

Educationwise: Better research opps along with the top competitions in robotics/engineering. Great professors at the top of their field with of course an amazing facility/top technology at your fingertips to help students achieve their utmost potential.

There really is nothing holding you back at CMU engineering and it is quite deserving of its rank along with Cornell, etc. I forgot the rest of the list but CMU engineering (especially ECE) is at the top of its game.

Computer Engineering is 3 and Electrical Engineering is 8 overall... I think most if not all of the other engineering are ranked in the top 10-20... RPI is also a good school for engineering. However, I made a decision to come to CMU even though I would have paid pretty much nothing and gotten a free laptop if I had gone to RPI. But then I came for the ECE program which is CMU is really good at. If I had wanted to do something like nuclear engineering or aeronautical engineering or some type of engineering that RPI only offers I probably would have had a harder time deciding between schools.

The engineering program is very good at CMU. I think you should go there.
