CMU vs UIUC engineering?

really hope to get some opinions, i'm running out of time.

main problem: CMU does not offer what i want to study. (industrial engineering)

i'm also worried that the workload at cmu will kill me.

uiuc is a great engineering school. and while uiuc does offer IE, it's not THAT great a program there. then there's it being a large school/less individual attention etc i'm worried that i won't be getting a very high quality education. (i mean, i actually want to do some serious studying.)

my alternate option: go to cmu, explore in my first two years before deciding. scary isn't it, when i could end up doing ECE or mech eng when i never meant to. (and kind of don't want to)

ah help! who can turn down CMU?

(i'm an international btw, going to cmu also means i pay alot more)

In my opinion, cost should play a fairly major role in deciding what you want to do. However, you might decide to study another major once you get familiar with all the engineering fields!

You didn't get into any other IE schools? Wisconsin? Michigan?

CMU does offer a very high quality education, and that means a lot of work. I have friends at UIUC, and they enjoy the school very much. UIUC is much bigger and has more parties and stuff, but it's really in the middle of cornfields. CMU has Pittsburgh, which is a small, run-down city. CMU might be more international-friendly, but that doesn't mean it's best for you. If you like the big school, lots-of-parties, school spirit atmosphere, UIUC would suit you better than CMU.

The closest program CMU has to IE is Civil Engineering, but UIUC's CivE program is top-ranked, while CMU's is not really ranked that high. It's a hard decision, but you should realize that both schools have their advantages and disadvantages. CMU WILL be more difficult. But if you are a good student, you should be fine at both schools. You really need to consider where you want to live for the next 4 years, what you want to do outside of school, who you want to be around (CMU kids tend to be smarter but more awkward), and don't forget to consider job prospects or grad school. I can't speak to either of those.

Good luck in your decision.
