CMU vs VT vs UIUC

Hi Guys,

I need a serious help. I am currently a graduate student at Virginia Tech and my major is Civil Engineering and my research is in machine learning and computing.

I have a chance to continue my PhD studies in one of these universities: Carnegie Mellon University, Virginia Tech, and University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.

Which one would you recommend. I'm looking for a high tech university so I can get to MIT or Stanford for job or Post-doc.

I would appreciate your help.

Thanks

Is it a good idea (in the Virginia Tech context) to make your Ph.D. at the same place you did the master’s degree? If not, cross that school off your list.

Thanks, so if I cross VT off the list, do you have any recommendations about the other two schools?

Ph.D. applications from a Masters’ degree often depend on what kind of publications you’ve landed. If you landed a couple of articles in peer-refereed magazines, it should help you a long way.
