So, I have to choose between these two schools, and I was leaning towards Wash U, but after reading some of the posts up here I'm reconsidering CMU. I was hoping for some opinions. I'm looking for a strong humanities/social sciences department, diverse student body, fun/exciting campus and surrounding city. Anybody have some advice?

Humanities and Social Sciences: Wash U is better unless you are into things like cognitive psych or Econ.

Diverse student body: CMU
Fun/exciting campus: CMU's is fun since its interlaced with Upitt's. If you aren't antisocial, you have a whooole 'nother set of friends just next door.
Surrounding City: Definitely Pittsburgh (CMU).

I'll be honest and blunt: CMU prepares you for the marketable majors and tries to get you in the best career possible with salaries/job opps. Business, Engineering, CS, (along with drama but those kids are crazy), the sciences, etc.

If you want like History/English, go to Wash U .

Honestly I'm going to have to disagree with the fun/exciting campus thing. Yes, contrary to popular misconception, there is in fact a social scene on campus, but I'm willing to bet Wash U has a stronger one. And I heard from a lot of people before I came here that having Pitt just down the road makes up for any lack of whatever on CMU's campus, but...I've been to Pitt's campus twice, and that was with a group of CMU kids because we were going to play DDR in Pitt's recreation lounge.

That depends on you. I go over to UPitt a lot and have friends there. Many of my friends don't. It all depends on the person, for example THE LAST THING I would go to U.pitt to do is to play DDR.

:)
