CMU's music performance major

Dear all,

hello, I was wondering how difficult it is to gain admission into CMU's music performance major. I know that the audition encompasses the majority of the application and the sat isn't weighed much, BUT, do you still need a decent sat/act? what is the deal with the application?

In 2004, the average SAT in CFA was 636 V, 692 M, but that includes architecture majors who are evaluated almost completely based on their academic record. Music majors are required to take one academic course per semester, so I know that CMU wants to make sure that music majors can pass the academic classes. I don't know exactly how CMU's admission works, but for Rice's school of music (similar setup, conservatory in a competitive university), they glance at applications to rule out people way out of the ballpark, then they listen to auditions. The professors that hear auditions give a ranked list of studnets to the admissions department who then evaluates the applications in full to make sure they cut it in academics.

I imagine that difficulty varies quite a bit based on instrument and even studio (if there are multiple professors for an instrument, you may audition for a spot with a particular professor). Sometimes due to weird things several years before, more or less spots in a studio may be open, which impacts the difficulty to be accepted. What instrument do you play?

Just so you know, this information is brought to you by a computer science major that studied with a Rice professor in high school. Not the best source of information, but at least I'm not just an engineer. :)

Well, thank you a lot for the information ^_^

I play the piano (12 years)
and i sing (7 years)

But, I would be going for vocal performance, not piano. Voice means more to me, though i initally took interest in piano early on in my life and not singing. thank you for asking^
