I have got offers from College of William and Mary, Lehigh University, University of Maryaland-College Park and Franklin and Marshall College. I intend to major in International Relations and I hope anybody who are acquainted with these schools could give my some suggestions. Thank you!

oh, sorry, my bad, it is CWM~

W&M is a great place to study IR. Our proximity to DC grants us access to amazing speakers and experts who often visit campus to lecture to teach or advise our students. We also have an office in DC and a semester program there just for W&M students. Our study abroad programs can really augment an IR major’s course of study.

Obviously you have lots of great choices but W&M might be a good fit considering your interests. We encourage you to visit campus during one of our admitted student programs so you can decide for yourself.

My daughter was accepted to WM and will be attending in the Fall. We’re from Maryland and I definately would not recommend College Park. Although it is possible to get a good education there, it is a really big party school, not much personal attention from professors and the surrounding atmosphere is not the greatest. We are much more willing to pay OS tuition for WM over College Park any day. The 2 schools are night and day. And btw I’m a graduate of College Park (many many years ago!) Good luck to whatever decision you make. :)

IMO W&M has by far the strongest IR program (and overall undergraduate program) on your list. W&M offers excellent IR perks including a semester in DC program, a summer security institute in DC, a W&M specific NATO internship, one of the top Model UN teams in the world, an undergraduate think tank, etc.

I’m going to William and Mary next year; my twin sister, who is also a history major, is going to UMD-College Park. I can’t really comment about the other schools, but when it comes to W&M vs. UMD, you can’t go wrong. UMD does have a reputation as a party school, but there are also plenty of opportunities that come with a large school and, especially if she’s in any honors or College Park Scholars program, the opportunities that come with those types of a program. In fact, UMD has a FANTASTIC honors program, one that I would have taken advantage of (over a full ride at my state university) had I not chosen to enroll at William and Mary instead. It depends on what you want from a school–they both have their merits, but they’re very different schools.

We cannot emphasize enough how important it is for you to visit the schools you’re considering and meet with students and faculty. That more than anything will help you make your decision.

I would really like to visit the school, but I am an international student from China, so it is kind of hard for me to experience CWM in person.

Thank you for the information! ^_^

Thank you for your suggestion!

Thank you!

Actually, I did get into college park scholars and the major and college I wish to attend. The following are copied from my portal.

Major: GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS
Advising College: COLLEGE OF BEHAVIORAL AND SOCIAL SCIENCE

I love the location of UMD, but at the same time worried about the large number of students. I know the ranking can not explain everything but it does explains something, so I am not sure if I could choose between Lehigh and CWM, will I choose UMD?

I can’t comment on Lehigh or F&M, but if you want to be an international relations major, I would not recommend Maryland. They don’t have an international relations program, major or minor. You would have to create that major yourself, meaning there wouldn’t be faculty schooled in your specific subject to help you along.

Also, considering the schools you applied to, you could be searching for a smaller school with more personal attention. As a student at Maryland now (who is looking to transfer to W&M), I can tell you that the professors seem far more interested in their research than their students. Of course, it’s a matter of personal preference and all are fine schools overall, but take a good look at what you want in a school, both in terms of size and program.

Thank you! Wish you good luck!

shuran, certainly we understand that visiting is likely difficult as an international student. Then we encourage you to take as much advantage of these forums, the welcome website and the Class of 2015 Facebook site as possible to get your questions answered.

At W&M, if you wish to be a government or international relations major you will absolutely be able to be one. There is no application process for these majors (in fact there’s only an application process for majoring in business or education…all other majors are open to any interested student). W&M is a great place to study either discipline because of our wonderful faculty, our amazing study abroad opportunities and our connections with DC. We even have a semester program in DC which includes an internship experience.
