I am a pretty competitive applicant for any school, and am hoping to do track. I excel in the high jump and several coaches have expressed interest in me.
What I am curious about is their responses, for example, Hopkins coach said "Let me know when you are applying, so I can support your application". I have received similar messages from other programs. Does this mean the coaches will talk to admissions or what?
Thanks for any help!

You might want to ask that question directly to the coaches of the schools you are most interested in. In some cases they may have more, partcularly if it’s an ivy with a Likely Letter to offer or a D1 school with NLIs available. The D3 schools are different and it will very widely by school and maybe even by sport. It can’t hurt, of course, but in some cases it might be just a minor bump. But the coach should be able to tell you what their pull is, and how willing they are to use the strongest dose of it on you.

I agree you should ask the coach what that means to him. i’ll tell you what I know from the Nescac world, D3. When a coach supports your application, he will let admissions know he is interested in you. that lets them know he is interested, however it doesnt make you a must have. Usually a coach supports the application, when he knows you dont need his help to get in, or you would be nice to have, but the player isnt on his must have list. That is different from a pick. Coaches get a certain number of picks, which let admissions know he wants you. They get a certain number of picks, so it can help a borderline admission candidate, or in the extreme case get a high quality recruit who might not have otherwise made the cut with admissions.

As far as Hopkins goes, yes, the coaches talk to admissions and have quite a bit of pull.

I sent you a PM (private message) about our experience with Hopkins recruiting.

My D received the same email as the OP. She applied RD and emailed the coach back with more info about herself and where to find her recruiting website. That was about a week ago… D did javelin last outdoor season and her best throw was better than the top JHU athlete.
